Meet Andrea Quinn | Writer & Mental Health Activist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Quinn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Start before your ready.” This spoke to me because I was making excuses as to why I wasn’t ready to start my business. It wasn’t the right time or I didn’t have a certain sum of money saved. There were many excuses and really I just needed to start. There would never be a “perfect time.” I just had to start. There will always be obstacle’s in your way, you should just start. Start small if you have to. Once you start, you’ve already began so keep going. Your time is definitely now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After my diagnosis of postpartum psychosis I was homebound. I started crafting and writing in my time as a way to heal. It became so enjoyable to me and a great way of expressing what I went through. Connecting with other women in support groups and listening to stories similar to mine made me brave enough to want to tell mine. When seeking help with postpartum psychosis I found very little information on it and it was very outdated. I searched and searched for blogs or articles that I could relate to. I felt alone, but I knew I wasn’t alone. I decided to start my own blog and social media sites to share what little resources there were and to keep talking about mental health. To stop the stigma of mental health in new families. It’s ok to to talk about it and you are not alone. There is help out there.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the city of Hollywood. It’s where I am born and raised and I still enjoy it’s popular spots and hidden gems. I love to grab a cheeseburger and have a frozen rum-runner at Le Tub in Hollywood Beach after a long day of relaxing on Hollywood’s boardwalk. Hollywood has a wonderful feeling of being home and on holiday at the same time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Four months after I had my first son I went into postpartum psychosis. With support from loved ones, therapy and medication I was able to recover. What I believe is a big part in my healing journey is my volunteerism with Postpartum Support International. Where bringing awareness to Perinatal Mental Health is a priority. Postpartum Support International’s ‘Climb out of the Darkness’ is the world’s largest event raising funds and awareness for the mental health of new families. The Climb is a community walk and international fundraiser for survivors, providers, and members of the community to come together.
Raising awareness for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, The Climb brings our community together to shine a light on a darkness we often don’t speak about. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common complication of childbearing.
I am leading South Florida’s first “Climb out of the Darkness event in October in Broward County.
