We had the good fortune of connecting with BLINK DA LINK and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BLINK DA LINK, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was younger I was really shy. Art & Music class was my way of expressing myself without having to use my voice. Ironically my voice is one of my main tools I use as an entertainer and DJ. I think that same need for an outlet to express myself is why I pursue an artistic career. I have a lot to say and whether it’s my voice, the music I choose to play, or the songs I produce; I’m going to express my 100% true self.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a DJ a lot of us are generally working with the same music as everyone else. What sets any DJ a part will be the way you piece those songs together. I believe my musical knowledge combined with my ability to control my audience’s actions and emotions are what sets me a part from the next DJ. I pride myself on being able to play everything from classic rock to R&B, to Reggae to Disco, and everything in between. I try my best to learn about everyone’s culture and that allows me to make a deeper connection with my audience while I’m playing.
I’ve worked extremely hard to get to where I am now and it wasn’t easy. Working for free, promises of being paid and never seeing a cent, playing when nobody was in the club… you name it, I did it. Looking back I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I learned invaluable lessons during my first 5 years or so. It prepared me for everything I’m experiencing now. I knew I really wanted this and giving up wasn’t an option.
I don’t know what my wife would think of this; I mean she probably wouldn’t be shocked, but the first thing I think about on most days is music. I’m excited for what the future holds for me. I’ve been working a lot behind the scenes on production and I’m ready to let the world in on the music I’ve been holding onto. I really want to see what people think of my work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami is the place to be! I’m vegan and three of my favorite spots to eat are Organic Food Kings, Love Life Cafe, & Fancy I Naturals. Vegan food can get a bad rep but these places actually have a lot flavor.
If I just want a cool spot to grab a drink and hang out with friends without the hassles of a club I’m going to Puttshack. The drinks are strong and the staff is great. You can catch a quick game of putt putt golf and they even have a DJ on the weekends. You might catch me spinning there.
Every Tuesday my homie Walshy Fire has a dope party called @rumandbass at Coyo Taco. You can catch me there once a month. When you want to get the party started on the weekend the Pool Hall at Red Rooster Overtown is a great place to start they have dope events Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Every Sunday a few of my colleagues have a brunch called @Riseandtoast and its a can’t miss event. If you’re reading this and want to know where to go in Miami just shoot me a DM on instagram. I’ll point you in the right direction.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ll start with my parents. From a young age they’ve always supported me and never limited me in any way. Fast forwarding to my time in college where I served as the President of the Caribbean Students Association; I owe a lot to the late Ms. Anne Marie De Govia. She was a mentor, advisor, and mother away from home. She challenged me and allowed me to develop a lot of the skills that are responsible for who I am today. More people have helped me along the way, but my parents and Ms. Anne Marie definitely set the tone.
