We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Ghosh Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
There was a point in my life where I was really able to burn the candle on both ends and it wasn’t unusual for me to sleep 4-5 hours a night. Hard work was ingrained in me by my father who was an immigrant from Calcutta, India. He moved to the United States for grad school with little resources and went on to build an amazing career as a structural engineer. I always admired his focus and determination and those were two qualities that helped me to get started on the journey of being an entrepreneur. The challenge was that when I first started my own business, I didn’t realize it was a marathon and not a sprint. Throughout the first year, I pretty much worked around the clock: my computer and I were inseparable. But gradually, I came to realize the importance of balance. I started to learn that when I balanced work with other facets of my life, my ability to be creative was enhanced. Not only that, but I opened up to the reality that our businesses are often a reflection of our energy. I deeply believe in the importance of expanding our own awareness, going within, and connecting with what brings us passion and joy. When we can bring conscious awareness to all areas of our lives – whether it’s business, relationships, physical, mental or spiritual practices – we’re able to gain a greater sense of holistic balance, which for me, has been an essential element in bringing my work forward in the world.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Soul Media was founded upon the belief that we can create positive change by harnessing the power of media and events. We do that through a variety of different initiatives. The first is through coaching, consulting and workshops to help entrepreneurs and organizations create a holistic marketing strategy that will help them to move the needle and make a greater impact. The second is through events that help connect, inspire and activate personal and spiritual growth. And the third is through our podcast, The Soul Collective, which explores the intersection between spirituality and business and provides actionable tools to help listeners connect with their truth, transcend limiting beliefs and to shine bright. The challenge has been integrating these passions so they function in concert with one another and creating a business that is multi-dimensional. It is a work in progress and I’ve learned how important it is as an entrepreneur to have patience so the vision can evolve organically. The most rewarding part of the journey is being able to help others and to learn and grow along the way.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been Blessed to learn and grow alongside so many impactful teachers, mentors and colleagues throughout my journey, each who has inspired and challenged me to expand my awareness in a different way. Chitra Prasad-Patel is the Founder of Health Conscious, an organization that centers around making health education and improvement accessible to all communities and increasing self-awareness through reflection. I love the way she brings so much intention, intuition and integrity to the work that she is doing in the world. I’m always interested in hearing her perspective when it comes to matters of ethics, social justice or how we can begin to create positive change in the world around us. It’s beautiful to know leaders who are committed to creating businesses that are a deep reflection of these values because I believe our world shifts when we align our work with an elevated vision for humanity.
