For me, success is about making reality more beautiful with your participation than it would be without it. For me, it’s about a feeling. The metrics, outward success, markers of “making it”, numbers, likes, popularity, visibility, praise or criticism or being ignored, awards, highlights, or trajectory that might come from what we make don’t matter much if we aren’t enjoying the process of making what we make, if the feeling isn’t there. The concept of “success” for an author is often perceived as a magic number. How big was your advance? How many copies have you sold? Did you win any awards? Are you on a best-seller list? (although the actual numbers for “best-selling” aren’t always in the public eye). Of course, authors love those shiny gold award stickers that validate our work.
