We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Canniff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always been passionate about fitness and wellness, but as a woman, I noticed that many fitness programs did not address the unique needs and concerns of female clients. I saw a lot of missing pieces in typical fitness programs, especially when it came to helping women feel more confident in their bodies and achieve their fitness goals in a sustainable way.
This realization led me to start thinking about how I could create a fitness program that was tailored to each individual’s needs and goals. I wanted to help women feel more empowered and confident in their bodies, while also addressing common concerns such as nutrition, mental health, and lifestyle factors that can affect overall wellness.
The thought of creating a unique fitness program that addressed these issues was daunting at first, but I was driven by a desire to make a positive impact in the lives of women who were struggling with their fitness and wellness journeys.
Through hard work and dedication, I was able to create a fitness program that has helped countless women achieve their fitness goals and feel more confident and empowered in their bodies. I continue to refine and improve my program based on feedback from my clients and my own research, always striving to provide the best possible experience for each individual.
Starting my own business has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. I am so grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of others and to create something that truly reflects my passion and values.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The first time I was introduced to any type of gym setting growing up was my first year in high school when the Strength and Conditioning Coach took the girl’s soccer team to the weight room to train pre-season. This was my first experience with a progressive training program and I quickly fell in love with learning how to do exercises like squats and deadlifts.
Over the course of my high school career, as my coaches changed, so did their viewpoint of having the girls’ team lift pre-season. Some coaches believed that lifting wasn’t as necessary whereas focusing on practicing for the specific sport was the main priority.
I began to observe that in the years my team didn’t lift preseason, there were a significant amount of more injuries the girls endured versus the years they did. Having a few injuries experienced myself, I quickly grew fascinated more and more with the strength and conditioning/athletic training/physical therapy world. I decided to go on to Springfield College to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and then completed my second degree in Physical Therapy.
For a long time, I had been searching for my purpose in life and the one constant source of enjoyment had always been something related to the body/movement/fitness/health, but I wasn’t quite sure which direction in that field I would end up being the most impactful doing. I’ve worked as a personal trainer and taught group fitness classes in various private and corporate gyms, always looking for a place to call home. I wanted to find a way to make fitness my full-time job, but these types of jobs were often only part-time.
After three years of working multiple positions with a corporate fitness job, I found myself severely overworked and underpaid for the many responsibilities I upheld. Despite speaking with my boss about my concerns, he refused to provide me with proper compensation. In the end, I decided to step down from some of my responsibilities to avoid burnout.
During the meeting where I discussed stepping down with my boss, he expressed doubts about my ability to succeed in the industry as a female and suggested that I wouldn’t be able to find another fitness job that paid as well as the one I had. However, I refused to let his words bring me down. Instead, I left the meeting with newfound confidence, determined to prove him wrong.
After discussing my situation with my partner, Ryan, who was already running an online fitness business called Peek Kinetics, we decided to join forces so that I could create my own coaching program specifically for women using all the knowledge and skills I have acquired from my many different types of experiences.
Being able to create a fitness program that has helped countless women achieve their fitness goals and feel more confident and empowered in their bodies is the exact purpose in life I was looking to achieve and it has been an incredibly rewarding journey. I am so grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of others and to create something that truly reflects my passion and values.
Overall, my passion for fitness and helping women with their overall confidence, my determination to succeed, and my willingness to take risks set me apart from others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course you need to start off by heading to South Beach with a beach chair and high noon in hand to soak in some sun rays! From there you could walk around the Miami Design District and cool off with a sweet treat at Kith Treats, enjoy a rooftop experience at places like Watr, Juvia, Astra, or the Sugar/Tearoom Miami, or brunch at Seaspice or Kiki on the River. It’s also a short trip just 30-45 minutes north of Miami to head to Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale for some shopping and fun happy hour spots. The possibilities are really endless with all the culture that exists in South Florida you have so many specialty cuisines to choose from, even some fun pop-up events and hidden speakeasies for some additional adventure!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to take a moment to give a special shoutout to my fiance, Ryan, who has been my biggest supporter and ally in building our business. Starting a business can be a challenging and stressful experience, but having a partner who shares your vision and your passion makes all the difference. Our shared passion for fitness and wellness has brought us together, and it continues to be a driving force in our business today. I know that with him by my side, we can overcome any challenge and achieve great things together.
