We had the good fortune of connecting with João Brasil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi João, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Baile Funk, a genre of music that originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been steadily gaining popularity among global audiences in recent years. The baile funk remix of Rihanna’s Rude Boy at the Super Bowl Halftime Show this year was a good example of that. This high-energy, dance-centric genre, characterized by its distinctive beats and provocative lyrics, has the power to unite people of all backgrounds and cultures through its infectious rhythms and electrifying performances. Like Hip Hop, Baile Funk represents a powerful expression of Brazil’s marginalized communities, challenging mainstream narratives and empowering those who have been historically oppressed. With its irresistible beats, Baile Funk has the potential to inspire and captivate audiences around the world, making it a truly promising cultural phenomenon with the ability to bring people together in celebration of diversity and unity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a DJ and music producer hailing from Rio de Janeiro, I try to innovate in the world of music. What sets me apart from other DJs and producers is my unique ability to blend different genres and sounds, creating a fusion of styles that is entirely my own. My music is a celebration of Brazilian culture and the spirit of Baile Funk, with its infectious beats and provocative lyrics. For me, Baile Funk is not just a genre of music, but a way of life and a source of inspiration for my work. I grew up in Rio, where the sound of Baile Funk filled the streets and inspired me to create my own unique sound. With my approach to music production and my deep appreciation for the cultural roots of Baile Funk, I become a driving force in the Brazilian music scene, and a true ambassador of this vibrant and exciting genre. It’s no an easy task, but knowing I’m not alone and have a whole community behind this, makes me comfortable and happy.
