We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Abecasis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My journey into the world of biomedical engineering began with a personal mission. As someone who has always been passionate about health and wellness, I pursued my Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Florida Atlantic University. Over the past six years, I have dedicated myself to finding strategies to not only increase our lifespan but, more importantly, our health span. I strongly believe that maintaining physical strength as we age is crucial for living a healthier and more independent life.
The inspiration for ADAM Rehabilitation and the ADAM brace came from a very personal place: my mother. She suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, which caused her knuckles to swell, severely limiting her ability to exercise and enjoy the everyday activities she once loved. I couldn’t stand idly by and watch her struggle, so I set out on a mission to find an alternative that could help her regain her strength and independence.
After exploring various options and finding them inadequate, I realized that while her hands were compromised, the muscles surrounding her shoulders were not. This led me to develop the ADAM brace, a hands-free exercise tool that stabilizes the arm and provides resistance for the shoulder during dynamic movements.
Our technology is centered around four core pillars: building strength, increasing stability, preventing injuries, and improving neuromuscular coordination. Each of these pillars is integral to providing a comprehensive rehabilitation solution for individuals like my mother, who struggle with physical limitations.
As the founder of ADAM Rehabilitation, my vision for the company is to create a line of innovative and adaptive exercise tools that enable dynamic strength routines while prioritizing safety and stability. I believe the ADAM brace is the first of its kind, capable of delivering balanced adaptive movements from a secure and stable point.
Our company’s mission statement reflects our commitment to improving lives: “We exist to provide cutting-edge rehabilitation tools that improve the standard of patient care, and we strive to enable improved patient outcomes by delivering the world’s safest and most stable interventions.”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Throughout my career, I have always been driven by a passion for innovation and a desire to make a tangible impact on people’s lives, particularly in the realm of physical rehabilitation. What sets me apart from others in the field of biomedical engineering is my relentless pursuit of solutions to real-world problems, and my commitment to improving health and wellness through cutting-edge technology.
Reaching where I am today professionally was not an easy journey. Like many entrepreneurs, I encountered numerous challenges along the way, such as building a strong team, navigating the competitive landscape, and bootstrapping our business without external funding. However, my unwavering determination and belief in the potential of ADAM Rehabilitation allowed me to overcome these obstacles and establish a successful business.
There are several lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey in the physical rehabilitation space:
Focus on the patient: Always prioritize the needs of the patients and healthcare providers. By keeping their requirements at the center of our development process, we were able to create products that truly catered to their unique needs.
Collaborate with professionals: Working closely with physical therapists, physicians, and other rehabilitation experts has been invaluable in understanding the challenges faced by patients and professionals alike. This collaboration has informed our product development and ensured that our solutions are both practical and effective.
Stay adaptable: The field of physical rehabilitation is constantly evolving, with new research and technologies emerging regularly. Staying adaptable and open to change is crucial for staying ahead of the curve and continuing to deliver innovative solutions.
Evidence-based approach: In physical rehabilitation, it’s essential to base our products and techniques on scientific evidence and the latest research. This ensures that our solutions are not only innovative but also safe and effective for our patients.
I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished at ADAM Rehabilitation and the impact our products have had on the lives of our patients. I am particularly excited about the future of our brand and the potential to revolutionize the physical rehabilitation industry further.
I want the world to know that at the heart of ADAM Rehabilitation lies a deeply personal story and a desire to improve the quality of life for people facing physical challenges. Our mission is to empower individuals with innovative tools and techniques that enable them to live healthier, more independent lives. By sharing our story and our passion for transformative solutions, we hope to inspire others to join us in our pursuit of a better future for all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting South Florida for a week-long trip, I would create an itinerary that highlights the area’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and unique attractions. Here’s a an idea of what we could do:
Day 1: Arrival and relaxation
I wouldn’t stress too much on this day, traveling not the most fun adventure so we can take it easy, maybe relax at a nearby beach, soak up some sun, and enjoy the ocean breeze and get dinner at a local seafood restaurant, we have some of the freshest fish around.
Day 2: Exploring Miami
I love going to Wynwood, so we would more than likely start at one of their cafe’s, and visit the Pérez Art Museum Miami or maybe the Frost Museum of Science. Lunch around Bayside Marketplace and grab a quick bite, maybe explore Little Havana, savoring Cuban cuisine and culture. And while were down south for the evening head out to South Beach for dinner and drinks.
Day 3: Water activities
My family has a boat, and thats always a blast if the weather permits, if we’re unable to go out we can always enjoy some type of water sports such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, or jet skiing. I am an avid diver, and love to be in the water so snorkeling or scuba diving is always on the bucket list.
Day 4: The Everglades
If you have never been on an airboat tour, going to the everglades to experience the unique ecosystem up close is always an adventure where you can spot alligators, birds, and other wildlife during your ride.
Day 5: Beach and nature day
I live about 10 minute from the beach, with plenty of restaurants near Atlantic avenue, like Cafe Luna Rosa. We can visit John U. Lloyd Beach State Park for swimming, sunbathing, and beach action, maybe explore Anne Kolb Nature Center’s walking trails and observation tower.
Day 6: The last Full Day
To make the most of the trip, the Miami zoo is always fun, I love being surrounded by the animals (luckily my friends do too, and its always a great experience to see all the beautiful animals. While we’re in the area we can stroll around Coral Gables, admiring the beautiful architecture and tree-lined streets. Brickell City Center is also another beautiful place to be.
South Florida is an incredibly diverse and exciting destination with something to offer every visitor. From its stunning beaches and water activities to its rich cultural heritage, fascinating wildlife, and world-class dining, there’s no shortage of fun and interesting experiences to be had.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to learn from some incredible mentors along this journey. My first mentor is a well known entrepreneur by the name of Ron Cocquyt, without his support we would have never been on the path of success we are on today. I would like to mention ADAM Rehabilitation has also been accepted into two technology incubators, EGLAcorp ran by Dr. Edwin Hernandez a pioneer in the computer science and technology development field where he introduced me to Dan Gudema and my current Chief Medical Officer Dr. Amos Dare. My alma mater, Florida Atlantic University has also been a huge supporter in this journey as they have accepted me into their very own technology incubator FAU Tech Runway where they have provided me with endless support along the way. Without their support, encouragement and guidance I can positively say we would not be in this position today.
