We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Duckworth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting Travelmation was to take an older and outdated industry, the “Travel Agent” industry, and help modernize it. We did this with innovative digital marketing strategies. We were also the first agency to allow agents to market themselves on social media. At the time when we started Travelmation there was virtually no one doing this. So we were fresh on the scene. Fast forward to today and we have nearly 1300 agents helping to revitalize the travel industry in a digital space.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are two key things that make Travelmation succeed: brand and team.
For branding – our name gets attention almost immediately as well as our catchy logo. We put a strong focus on being modern, clean, and crisp. We stand out in the travel space for being the company that is different – a breath of fresh air.
For team – true success comes in that magical moment when you have the right people in the right positions at the right time. We are there and it’s working. I also had someone say to me once, “I’ve never seen a company where EVERYONE appears to be happy.” I take that very seriously. We want our team to be happy and passionate about travel and their work.
The biggest challenge we faced in recent times was the pandemic. When the world shuts down – how do you keep a business alive? Especially a travel business? We had to bond and hold tight and keep the hope that things would shift and we could soar again. We had to completely change our focus. As things began to open up, that’s where we had to go. For example – pre-pandemic we did a ton of cruises and international travel. We couldn’t do that for quite some time. So we instead put our attention on land, local resorts and domestic spaces we hadn’t touched before. It wasn’t always easy but we powered through and are thriving better than ever.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start the morning with a hot cup of coffee at Under the Mango Tree. Then I would head to the Miami Design District to fully experience the upscale scene there.
After that, I would hit the road and drive up I-95 to Fort Lauderdale for an early dinner at Foxy Brown.
Dessert would be Kilwins ice cream on Las Olas.
If you wanted a nightcap – head towards the Intracoastal and pick any place that catches your attention.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to Katelyn Duckworth, my wife. Without Katelyn’s endless support I would not be where I am today. I’d likely be wandering aimlessly searching for my next ‘thing’. She helps center and ground me. She is a driving force for me and our family and none of this would be possible without her.
