We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Sarette and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It wasn’t a choice, I have always found my true identity through creating. I’ve communicated and expressed myself through music and performing arts as far back as I can remember, so I’d say it found me!
When I was a kid, I was always curious. My family always called me “Curious George”. I was most interested in whatever skill or extracurricular activity my sister was pursuing whether it was the school choir, dance, or gymnastics. She and I did your typical sports but the only thing that really ever satisfied was my competitiveness. I’d say there was a switch around my teen years when I realized I’d found 100% more joy and passion in music and theatre than sports.
High school became all about musical theatre and I focused my time and energy into the amazing music department we had at Manchester High School Central (Manchester, New Hampshire). I always joke that I’m the other Adam S. from Manchester because *fun fact* Adam Sandler graduated from my high school!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I graduated in 2011 from a conservatory-style performing arts program at the University of Hartford -Hartt School for my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theatre. I immediately became a member of the Actors’ Equity Association with an amazing regional contract at the historical Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore.
After that ship sailed I landed in NYC for a year auditioning until I was contracted with Disney Cruise Line as a Dancer/Mainstage Performer!
Spending the next couple years surviving in and out of NYC in various regional productions, the gypsy life was getting tiresome, and I realized the fulfillment I needed was shifting. I was spending most of my energy trying to fit into a mold for certain roles and vocal types and beating myself up or not having better technique as a dancer.
Why tell someone else’s story when I could be telling my own? That’s when I started songwriting. I had always dabbled in arranging music throughout high school and college, so the melody writing and harmonies came natural. My journey as a lyricist, however, was what was MOST exciting.
Fast forward to living in NYC for over 10 years, I have been writing original pop music for 7 years and have an album/song cycle released called SEARCHING, a handful of singles ranging from soulful ballads to electro-pop anthems, and a second album in the works entitled AFFIRMATION which is a genre-hopping journey of self love and acceptance! All of my music can be streamed on all platforms under Adam Sarette.
I have fell in love with producing and hosting events for numerous reasons, but I found that giving a platform to other LGBTQ+ Artists is a huge passion of mine! I’m excited to see what’s in store for my next chapter as an artist!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well…I’m biased to Astoria, Queens as it’s been the borough I’ve spent most of my years in and out of during the whirlwind of my career! The best thing about Astoria is that almost everywhere is walkable if not a short cab ride away! THE FOOD is eclectic and yummy ranging from fresh Mediterranean to mouthwatering comfort food! In particular 30th Ave (which is conveniently a subway stop as well) has countless restaurants, Sweet Afton being one of my favorites! We have a small but very mighty LGBTQ+ scene here with 3 queer bars -Albatross, Icon, and newly opened Kween! I have the privilege of hosting a few events per month at Albatross including my SONGWRITER SHOWCASE which has highlighted and connected me to so many indie artists!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As driven as I am, my family deserves a shoutout! The support and love I was given at such a young age helped me cultivate and realize my potential. We didn’t come from much, but we made the most of what we had which speaks volumes to being a creative person.
