We had the good fortune of connecting with Aidana Baldassarre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aidana, what are you inspired by?
What inspired me when I started Trashfashions, is the fact that there is so much good materials out there that can be used to create something fun to wear. I love experimenting and mostly create one of a kind pieces of art that is wearable from unusual materials.

From single- used plastic and rubber, to good fabric from already used outfits.
I always took my art and designing mostly as my own creative process, but then I incorporated the elements of fashion shows events, workshops to create consciosness and rise funds and that was a complete different ball game that opened up a different way to share my own creative juices.

The response of the public alone it was what kept me inspire to continue.
The idea of producing wearable art, accessories and fashion shows, that show without preaching ways of being sustainable.
The proccess itself of creating and forming community around it, it’s an inspiration not only for me as an artist and designer but for anyone involved.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like challenges, and so that is what happens with my art, I challenge myself to create using 100 percent discarded materials.
I would not say that it was easy, but I grow up with creative people, my mother single mother that was working full time and creating sculptures with cardboards and paper mache. I learned how to sew and kneet and crochet and I had an issue with the world of “Fast-Fashions” . I always dressed up different.
I could say that Trashfashions, was born out of the combination of all that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have the tendency to take anyone that comes and visits to Museums, depending on what they are showing.
In Miami I would take them to walk around Brickell, Miami Beach,Wynwood to see the walls, Coral Gables, to walk around. Cocunut Grove.
In Palm Beach to the Norton Museum of art and Boca Museum.
The Flagler Musum, and the Breackers Hotel.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Since I started Trashfashions in Boston 2004 there has been many people and institution on the way that support my efforts.
Models, museums and institutions that believed in my work and hire me to either teach a workshop or to present a show as a way to fundraiser event.
My husband modeled several times, my son as well.
My mother was an amazing support, being an artist herself.
The list is long! but I have to say that my immidiate family was always the main support.
