We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandra Azur and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alejandra, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, lived in the Dominican Republic for four years, and finally moved to Miami at the age of 14. Growing up, I was not only influenced by my Puerto Rican heritage, but also by my Spanish dad and grandparents, the Dominicans around me in school, and the multicultural melting pot that is Miami. Puerto Rico, like other Latino countries, has a rich culture of pride, representation, and diversity. Being a Puerto Rican navigating different cultural landscapes has not only fueled my creativity but has also instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to authentically represent my heritage.
The challenges posed by the pandemic redirected my focus to the digital realm, particularly TikTok, where I’ve garnered a substantial following as @alejandritisss. This platform allowed me to connect with a diverse audience through my lighthearted and humorous content, showcasing my Latin roots and family dynamics.
As I navigate this dynamic path, my Puerto Rican heritage remains at the core of who I am. It influences my work as an influencer, collaborating with major brands as an ambassador of Hispanic culture. My aim is to continue making a mark on my island, representing Hispanic talent proudly, and solidifying my identity as a Puerto Rican talent destined to entertain.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
a. From my initial experiences at the AFA Theater Academy in Santo Domingo to immersing myself in the dynamic artistic community at MAC in Miami, I’ve fully embraced the diversity that shapes narratives. Representing various Latina characters on TV, including roles in “Mariposa de Barrio,” “Mi Familia Perfecta,” and “Modern Family,” has been a significant part of my journey. However, for every character I’ve portrayed, there were 500 rejections preceding that one yes. In an industry where rejection often outweighs acceptance, I’ve come to understand that every no is an opportunity destined for someone else, and by trusting the universe, the right opportunities tailored for me will manifest in due time. My artistic pursuits led me to Los Angeles, where I pursued a “Master in Cinema Makeup” under the guidance of the Oscar-winning Mrs. Ve Neill, all while concurrently working on my bachelor’s degree at UF Online. Juggling makeup school from 9-5 and college work from 5-9pm daily for two years was undeniably exhausting but immensely rewarding, revealing the true meaning of hard work.
Amidst the challenges brought by the pandemic, which led to the discontinuation of makeup school and a return to Miami, TikTok emerged as a creative outlet. One video playfully mocking the chaotic chemistry of my lively Lopez family opened doors for me to become a cultural ambassador on the platform. Collaborations with companies such as T-Mobile, Dunkin’ Donuts, Disney, and Hyundai followed, being chosen as one of the three VIP invited influencers to the 2022 Latin America Music Awards, and becoming a Radio Show Host for WQBA1140 marked a pivotal moment in expanding my influence.
My journey, marked by constant rejection in acting, sleepless nights in makeup school, and relentless content creation on TikTok, has imparted valuable lessons. It underscores the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and trusting the process. I’m proud of overcoming these challenges, and I want the world to know that my brand and story are a testament to resilience, creativity, and the belief that every setback is a setup for a greater comeback.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s a reason I stayed in Miami after coming back from LA, no other city in the United States has such a dynamic mix of cultures, breathtaking views, and countless fun activities. For destinations, I’d definitely recommend the inspiring streets of Wynwood with a luxurious contrast of Miami Design District, a visit through the iconic Bayside shopping mall and Lincoln Road and finish the nights off with a fun walk around Ocean Drive, Coral Gables, and Regatta Grove. For food, Doggi’s Arepas is the best spot for some good Venezuelan arepas, and Baires Grill for an amazing Argentinian steak. I love going to the Miami Microteatros where they showcase plays inside shipping containers, and get some drinks during Rosa Sky’s Happy Hour, or any happy hour for that matter.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
a. The life of an artist is intricate, demanding unwavering support to achieve the desired success. When I first disclosed my aspiration to become an actress, it was at a pivotal parent-teacher conference. Faced with the questions “What do you want to do in life?” and “How will you do it?” I boldly declared, “An actress, and by attending the best acting schools in the world.” Witnessing my determination, my parents emerged from that meeting with tears in their eyes, pledging unconditional support. From that moment, my mom seamlessly transitioned into the role of my “momager,” and my father became my most fervent supporter. I owe much of who I am as an artist to my parents’ tireless efforts. They consistently shuttled me to acting classes, engaged in extensive research on classes, programs, and workshops, endured hours of waiting during auditions, and provided unwavering support through the highs and lows of my career.
Unconsciously, my TikTok content, which humorously reflects my hectic family dynamics and “crazy parents,” became a way of honoring them through what I do best—humor. I wouldn’t be the content creator I am today if it weren’t for using them as examples for my content. Even more commendable, my parents haven’t merely supported my endeavors; they actively contribute to my creative process. They assist in crafting content, help me write contracts, and consistently explore new ways to reinvent my social media presence. Every decision I make is informed by and valued for my parents’ advice. Their unwavering support and active involvement have been the cornerstone of my journey, and I am profoundly grateful for their enduring impact on my artistic endeavors. I love you guys!
I would also like to dedicate this shoutout to my brothers, especially Jorge, who although no longer with us, is always protecting, guiding, and influencing me through my life journey. He told me one day he wanted me to be a star, so all my efforts are dedicated to fulfilling his wish and making him proud.
