We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandra Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alejandra, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I recently had a baby boy, he is 1 year old now, and I never understood or appreciated the Working Mom as I do now! Let me tell you, it is real! There are no set of instructions that can prepare you enough. This is something that has completely changed my life 100%. My work-life balance now is learning to find the time and making the most out of that time – whether it is 30 min or 5 min (literally).

Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?Rock + Bone was born from pure passion! I had worked in corporate for about 15 years but I felt there was something lacking. I was not satisfied or fulfilled with myself and with what I was doing and although I did not know exactly what I wanted to do then, I knew I needed to do something else – if that makes any sense!? At rock + bone we create limited edition handmade statement accessories, mainly focused on earrings! I think what sets us apart is that we are constantly changing the designs, collections and colors…creating a true sense of exclusivity and uniqueness!

As an entrepreneur there will always be ups and downs throughout your journey. You might have one great month but then one terrible customer experience will shift that roller coaster ride! You have to know you’re not alone; everyone experiences the same rides in this business. A second important piece of advice is to NEVER compare yourself to someone else’s success. You’ll never succeed if you keep looking behind your shoulder!
I’d like for people who don’t about my brand, to know that we are a small woman owned business. Rock + Bone is operated by myself and a team of amazing ladies in Latin America who are passionate about making every stitch and stone stand out so you can feel special! I myself lead the entire design and operational aspect, from marketing to packaging, shipping to social media content, etc. and my team handles all the final production. I walked into this knowing it would be a challenge but it has been more than that – it has been an entire learning process! Regardless of the brands success, I am so proud of the things I have accomplished. That in itself is what will make you stronger!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough one! Living in Miami gives you such versatility to do so many amazing things! If I had to choose…Id start my day by taking them to have a little Cafecito over on 8th street at Versailles..a classic not to be missed! A stop at the beach is a must! The water, sand, fresh air completely changes your day! The beach always opens my appetite so I’d head on over to Mandolin, a beautiful spot filled with great decor and a cozy Mediterranean feel! Food and ambiance are always on point! A little stroll over to MDD (Miami Design District) is always great for window shopping, people watching and inspiration! They have such great vibrant colors, architecture and little corners filled with surprises! I’d then stop by the Dior Cafe for some sweets and a little more ppl watching.. because why not!? Perhaps a pit stop at BCC for some shopping and then a nice rest to fuel up for dinner at Kiki’s on the River! Kiki’s is a beautiful spot on the river also great for watching the people come in with their boats and seeing them dock up to the restaurant!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Shout out would be to my mother who is my rock and my inspiration – she taught me about perseverance and hard work. She helps me daily in all my projects, be it work related or now with my newborn son. She was also an entrepreneur most of her life as well as a widower when I was just 4 years old. She went through alot and I admire all her stories. They made me realize that no matter how high or low your hurdle may be, you can make it. I don’t know what I’d do without her.
