Meet Alejandro Caballero

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandro Caballero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alejandro, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It all began with a story that my son, Noah, had created between 5th and 6th grade. After helping him develop his principal character, the story really grew from there over the next couple of years. The story was compelling, and after riveting my son a lot of my ideas I created back in my high school years, Noah told me to do my own story. My wife and I thought “it would be great to college applications if he was already self published”. The more we thought about it, I realized the moment we put anything to print and put it out to the market, this can go into many directions. We needed to form a business for legitimacy and credibility, and for legal protections, and so on. We also wanted to make sure we can control how the stories were told. So, going to the big comic companies (Marvel,, and DC) was out of the question. The more time went on, our stories crossed paths and entire comic universe developed, and we moved forward to incorporating, and getting everything set up to bringing our stories to the market place.
As for our stories, we knew they needed to be relevant. So we thrust our characters into the real world. Our characters have to face the burdens of the modern day society that each and every one of us have to. These heroes aren’t looked up to, they are villainized by society because they demand change. The Scribe, Noah’s character, wears the newspapers and evidence of the criminals he’s going after as his mask and exposes truth and corruption, turning him into a very polarizing figure in the more grounded world. Penance, my character, is a Templar knight who serves his punishment of immortality. So having seen and been involved in every human conflict in history to this day, he battles monsters of old in an our present world. They are flawed heroes in a flawed world. That’s why we knew they mattered and that’s how we came up with them.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The work we do here at Edge Comics is truly amazing and innovative. The freedom of creativity is truly the greatest draw of this industry. Unlike other big companies, we have stories that take place in the real world and we are looking to be able to support smaller independent creators who don’t have the resources to publish their own work. This family owned company is truly unique in this way. We are very excited about our new trade paperbacks coming soon as they will unfold many crazy new plot developments. We cannot wait for people to see how extensive this universe really is.
Now, have there been challenges? Absolutely. What venture doesn’t have challenges? Of course, there are the normal challenges of self funding a project/business and dealing with the high cost of printing, and meeting deadlines. But, I think the biggest challenge has been how to prioritize time. Normally, there are around 5 people that work in a single title. This helps with workflow and meeting deadlines. Well, here at Edge Comics, we have me and my son, Noah. We are it. We write, draw, ink, color, and letter our own titles. Actually, Noah has gotten really great (and fast) with coloring that he has taken that on for both titles. Now, that’s a lot of work! Noah is still in high school, and I also have a full time job as an educator. On top of that, I need to be present for my wife and kids (we have three in total). So, I would say it is a challenge in prioritizing time. It’s easy for any artist in ANY art form to get sucked into their work. The great thing is that Edge Comics was formed as a family, so we do much of it as a family. Edge Comics is a fulfillment of three dreams. The first dream is my son’s dream of creating, writing and drawing his own comics/stories. The second dream is mine. I wanted to do exactly this in high school (when I first created what we know now as Penance). I thought the dream was not for me. And now, it has been resurrected. And the third, bringing my family together through it. There is nothing like getting the issues ready to print and getting things set up for a comic con, or going to some of our local stores to deliver issues that they want to sell. Working together is a true blessing.
It took a lot of work and it is still requiring a lot of work to be at the point we are today. It was not easy, but it has been worth it and will continue to be. For any creators looking to show the world what they have to offer, know that hard work beats talent everyday. Relentless, hard work. Edge Comics isn’t just a company. It’s a family that built not just memories but now an entire universe. We truly cannot wait for the world to see this new saga unravel.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are many great spots that are very well known. But, would say, anything out in the water (boating, fishing, snorkeling) would be a great choice! From Miami, down to the keys!
As for food, anything that has fresh catch, you have a winner! Otherwise, there is another restaurant that has a name in Spanish that is a curse word, and the English translation is just as bad. It’s called, El Carajo. Yes, it’s in a gas station, but good luck finding a table! It’s great traditional Spanish cuisine, and they have a good wine list, too.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This whole endeavor is truly a family affair along with the help of some friends. We want to really thank, Omar Muniz for being a great soundboard and helping us regarding strategy, industry trends, introductions and basic support. Aida Diaz, for great support in all we do. Pedro Jambo, for helping to bring our characters closer to life by creating custom action figures of our characters! Lastly, Gary Barker, by who’s collaboration both affirmed our endeavor, and gave us confidence and legitimacy.
