We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Ciklik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Blue Space has been our ability to pivot our model by listening to our customers. Constantly adjusting our product to suit their wants and needs has allowed us to stay relevant and top of mind. Companies that don’t listen to their customers and aren’t constantly refreshing their products run the risk of becoming stale and losing business. Had we stayed with our original model and not listened to our audience, we would have found it difficult to continue operating. We are a customer-focused brand, and we realize that without them there would be no us.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Blue Space is a platform of spaces on the water that can be privately booked by the hour. Our first space is currently live in Miami Beach where our guests have booked picnics, date nights, and many other unique activities. We also have a membership option for those that want to book a space on a more frequent basis.
We launched Blue Space because we felt there was a need to get people to the water in an affordable and accessible way. Owning waterfront real estate or boats/yachts is a luxury and often not possible for many people. We wanted to build something where people could have their own private space on the water, even for just a few hours at a time. We are inspired by “Blue Mind” science, which highlights how spending time on the water can have positive benefits on our minds and bodies. I am very excited to see what the future will bring for Blue Space and our growing community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has so much to offer tourists as well as locals. I’ve proudly lived in Miami for basically my whole life (31 years). From a cultural perspective, no American city can truly compare. The diversity of our people, especially those from Latin America makes Miami truly unique. My father was born and raised in Mexico City and my mother was born in the US to Cuban immigrants, so I am a proud byproduct of diverse Latino ancestry.
If a friend was visiting me in Miami, I would do the following. For coffee, we’d grab a Panther Coffee or go to a Cuban cafe to have a cafe con leche to start our day. I’m obviously a big fan of the water, so afterward I would take them to the beach to relax for a few hours. For lunch, we’d grab some tacos and a margarita at Taquiza. Then we would visit the Pérez Art Museum, which always has nice exhibits (and great water views). For dinner, we would book a Blue Space and add a couple of Omakai sushi boxes to our booking and watch the sunset on the bay. If there happened to be an Inter Miami soccer match during the week, we’d be sure to attend as we are proud season ticket holders.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have several people that I can thank and attribute my successes thus far to, but none more than my parents. They have always been there for me through everything and have always encouraged me to do what I feel is right for myself. They have never steered me in a direction in which I did not feel was right for me. Whether choosing what school to attend or whether or not to get my MBA, they have never been the ones to tell me what to do. When I wanted to start my own business, they were excited for me and encouraged me to jump in right from the start. They also happen to be great and loving grandparents of my 2-year-old son Asher and newborn son Uri.
