We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Witherow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
It’s interesting because car-sharing is a $14 billion dollar industry and about ten years old yet few people know about it, especially in Miami. What’s so great about this business is that the barriers to entry are very low. Most people have access to a spare car or two, or can buy one easily and begin making a few extra thousand dollars a month. That’s what my YouTube channel, Car Rental University, focuses on and that’s the market I serve. I have a good handful of side hustlers in my audience, but also quite a few large fleet operators that I have relationships with.

Miami is still very behind on car-sharing, mainly due to the nature of the city and its love for exotic cars. Most people here want their own cars and luxury brands at that. However, the mentality in other major cities, especially New York, Boston, San Francisco, and LA, is that they no longer want to own cars as the cost of ownership is too high in those cities. Now they prefer to rent a car for a day or two at a time, from a nearby host, and just not own a car all together.

What should our readers know about your business?
I sold a minority share of Car Rental University to Kairos Capital Resources and we have a joint venture now building out the largest electric fleet in the car-share and rideshare rental industry through Kairos Mobility Ventures. What I love about our team is that it’s an all-star team of car rental professionals. Everyone has extensive experience in this industry coming from Kyte, UBER, FreightBazaar, etc. Aside from that, everyone is not only smart, but great to work with. No egos, just get the job done. I couldn’t be happier with our team.
As for me, my journey has been long and diverse. I was formerly an actor in NYC and DC for almost 15 years, specializing in stage and film. I started my car rental business as a side hustle to support my original dream. Ironically, New York served to be the perfect training ground for acting AND car rentals. It was a very tough market where I perfected my private rentals system, which I now sell online and is the main reason I was brought on as Chief Mobility Officer at Kairos Mobility. The main lesson I learned is that life doesn’t always turn out how you think it should, but it usually is better. I love my life now in Miami!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I would rent a hot car to take them around in. I normally do this with friends who visit since I know most of the exotics rental owners. We would need to get some kind of boat cruise or jet ski rental in during that time as well. Depending on their budget, I’d take them to a handful of nice restaurants – likely Call Me Gaby in SoBe, Zuri in Wynwood, Mandolin Aegean Bistro, and probably get a Resort Pass for the day at the Four Seasons Hotel. If they want to dance, we’d drop by Floyd, the basement club of Space. If they want to be low key, we’d hang out in Coconut Grove and perhaps go to the Vizcaya Museum.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shoutout to my private equity partners Don Schreffler, Ganesh Rewanwar, and Valerie Lee. They saw my talent on YouTube and brought me onto their team to build out an excellent operation in the car rentals industry. And of course, my wonderful mother, Michele.
