Meet Alexandra Sarabia | Movement Performer / Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Sarabia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson so far has been that I can’t pursue art to feel alive, in that operating dynamic “art”has carried me away and drained my spirit out of my own talents. Instead, I have to genuinely live life and as a result, art organically takes place. Keeping that order of action taking my soul is unshakably fulfilled and my art is genuine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Im a multidisciplinary artist born in 1990 in Caracas, Venezuela.
Movement and Fashion are my main outlets of self expression. I am a specialty circus acts performer. My main act is hair suspension, yet, I also perform different aerial apparatuses such as dance trapeze and looped straps.
On the other hand, I make stage apparel for circus performers (accommodating requirements of various disciplines) , dancers and musicians.
One of the most challenging aspects of my artistry so far has been to understand that my many outlets ( dancing, fashion and painting-which I have not talked about yet-) can coexist and create one harmonious universe instead of feeling pulled into different worlds as I tap into each of them.
In the later years, I have been looking for ways to condensate in a more practical way all my outlets and this lead to the developed of a distinctive hair suspension/dance act where I wear a dress made by me (of course) and drip paint over a loose canvas placed on the floor inspired by the sounds of life music by a specially selected musician in order to complete the sensorial creation experience. With this act I create a unique tangible art piece (the canvas as a product) generated by a unique moment (the performance).
Why paint? As a child my first targeted intuitive outlet was painting and drawing. Even though, I was never encouraged into its full development, it was not taken away either. Painting has accompanied me all along; it has established a channel of communication with my non-physical body and has become an important part of my creation processes.
Currently, I continue my search for identity condensing my outlets of expression, yet, this time I’m looking for an outcome in the textile universe. This it’s currently on the works and I would be delighted to share the results of my work with you in a future interview.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I’m a history enthusiast, first I would like to give a sense of where are we standing, so I would definitely suggest to take anyone to the magnificence of the Everglades National Park and the Miccosukee cultural center (indigenous village). Catch an airboat ride, canoe or paddle board and checkout the alligators in their stunning ecosystem.
As an artist, I wouldn’t be myself if I don’t advise to visit the Instute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and the Rubell museum. And try to catch a Miami Blocco Samba percussion workshop.
For food I would like to show any visitor the beauty of the Redlands Agricultural area. I would suggest visiting the Fruit and Spice Park, then grab a bite to eat at the Heritage Market. Also, visit and support the local the farms such as Glaser organic farm and Teena’s Pride Produce/Michael Borek Farm, Knaus Berry Farm.
When it comes to night fun, check out Schnebly’s tropical fruit winery. Or on the fancier end get a ticket to specialty act shows at the faena theatre
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to express my gratitude to my friends Magela Herrera and Zelmira Patron for keeping me company on this artistic journey. My art path has mostly been very lonely and uncomprehended by the people around me. It is until I meet Zelmira and Magela that I have found guidance, support and empathy towards my artistic ways.
