We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Colon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea behind Sage Cleaning was always bigger than just making
money. I wanted a place that would create jobs that provide an ethical,
livable wage, career opportunities for women in the community, and a
place to allow us to teach our team strong personal development skills
and financial literacy. With Sage Cleaning, we can make a huge
impact within our local community through our charitable partnerships.
But most importantly, my greatest why in my entire life, will be creating
a foundation for my family to grow and prosper.

What should our readers know about your business?
Believe it or not, we opened in April 2020. Like many other small
businesses, we could have never predicted the challenges we would
face and all the sleepless nights we would endure. In the most
transparent terms, like many, we had disconnected ourselves with
what we saw on the news across the world until it made its way into
our own neighborhoods. The domino effect of city lockdowns proved
that this was in fact our reality. The lockdowns and restrictions felt like
a punch in the stomach to all our late nights going over structures,
processes and event planning. We felt unsure what to do next. Sage
Cleaning seemed to be over before it started.  Nonetheless, we
couldn’t help but still feel a passion for what we were doing regardless
of what was happening around us. The need for more jobs,
community outreach, and a foundation for our family seemed to be
more prevalent than ever. But in that moment, it all just clicked!  We
prayed. We manifested. We pivoted and at times it was truly
HARDDDDDD!! There were so many times I wanted to kick my self for
pushing through during the pandemic, but we did it!
It’s been two years and we went from running the business on our
dining room table to our own office, hired an office manager, a staff of
10 and continue to partner with two incredible charities in our short
time in business.
My greatest lesson is that your strength to survive is proof that you
can push through the impossible. There is nothing you can’t do and
there is no one that can stop you.
Remember to not give into fear, stay committed to your plan, pivot
when you need to and ALWAYS remember your WHY!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m all about the beautiful views!! So I would say let’s check in to the
Mandarin Oriental, begin the day with room service and a champagne
breakfast, followed by an immersive day at the spa!  The best view of
the city for lunch is at the Rusty Pelican. The view looking back at the
city is incredible. The city looks peaceful from this angle, not to
mention the food is delicious.
For a night on the town, dinner at Setai is always the perfect choice.
After having so many upscale delights and treats throughout the day, I
like to head over to Wynwood for some dancing and cocktails!  Then
repeat.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The biggest shoutout I would have to give is to my Mother. She saw
the vision I had and supported me the entire way. Not only did she
support my vision, but my Mother helps me keep it all together. She is
the VP of Operations and continues to use the knowledge she has
gained over her 30 plus years in management. She is such an integral
part of our team. She is the perfect balance to my visionary brain as
she is the details Queen! I can’t imagine not seeing her everyday at
the office.
