Meet Alivia Murdoch | Artist, Yoga Instructor, and Chef

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alivia Murdoch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alivia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has played a large role in getting me to where I am today in my business and career. It’s one of those things that never feels easy and isn’t supposed to feel comfortable. But in a positive way, I think it really makes you commit to the path you’re on. You’ll take the risk if you know that what’s on the other side of the jump means enough to you or feels right in your heart.
When I first quit my full-time corporate job, it truly felt like leaping off a cliff. I didn’t have much lined up at the time, and it was a huge financial risk. But respecting myself and my ambition meant more to me than staying, and the momentum from that leap has definitely paid off.
I think facing risks is an inevitable part of working for yourself and living your own creativity. You have to be bold, and it’s going to feel scary. But I believe that’s where a lot of great expression can come from – along with deep faith and trust in your process.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I consider myself a multidisciplinary artist using culinary arts, movement arts, and visual arts to support my business and life. I’m a pretty immersive person and I fully believe that you should strive to make your passions become your work and your life. Many years before I even thought about becoming an entrepreneur, I had decided to make 3 commitments in my life: to culinary hospitality, to movement, and to art. Some people I meet think that sounds like a lot but in my eyes those things make up who I am and life would be out of balance without all three.
At the core, it really is just about having outlets for my creativity. Food is nourishing but also rooted in history and culture. Learning to cook and be creative with recipes has been one of the healthiest decisions I’ve made for myself – both my body and my mind. Movement is important for vitality and learning to move intuitively with your body is extremely freeing. Visual art is a channel for flow and emotions. It really shows people your inner world.
The decision to turn these three pillars into businesses came to be with the desire to be of service to others in a long term way. I believe it shouldn’t be abnormal or specialized to cook high quality meals for yourself, be able to lead your own body through nourishing movement practices, and express yourself visually in a way that draws other people in.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in North Beach, which a lot of people consider the last “untouched” part of Miami Beach. I absolutely love it here: there’s tons of small local coffee shops with owners from many different countries (Argentinian, Cuban, Venezuelan, Dutch), the beaches and the ocean are beautiful, the boardwalk is a great place to recreationally exercise (Rollerblading is my activity of choice), and there’s a bunch of hidden restaurant gems. My all time favorite restaurant is Sushi Bichi. It’s one of the closest restaurants to the beach itself, has a great outdoor ambiance with super friendly staff, and has great, creative Japanese fusion cuisine. Silver Lake also has delicious food and a stellar natural wine list. The Bandshell is a music venue that gets a lot of funky music performers. There’s public volleyball courts out back and I teach yoga here every Tuesday at 6pm!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to thank all of the lovely women (my mom, friends, and sisters) in my life. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to trust my own intuition without their advice. I’m lucky to have a core group of ladies that have similar ambitions, mindsets, and belief systems. Watching and supporting them on their journey helps motivate me just as much as their actual support lifts me up.
