We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
With mental health, there are a lot of rules and ethics that guide our industry. We are not allowed to ask our clients for reviews. It’s so hard because reviews are the latest way potential consumers make decisions about the services they want to use. We often will ask friends, family members and colleagues to write our reviews since we can’t ask our clients to write them. We have to make sure we follow our ethical standards both in our clinical practices and our business practices.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Don’t let anyone tell you starting a business is easy! It’s a lot of hard work but it’s totally worth it. I’ve always be a straight A, go-getter from birth. It’s ingrained in my blood. When I decided to open up a business, I knew that I wanted it to be something that impacted other people in a great way. It’s part of the reason my practice accepts insurance; I wanted to help a wide variety of clients with a wide variety of concerns and contexts. I’ve also learned that you can’t help everyone and you have to niche down. Part of my journey has been to realize how to make the best impact by working with clients who really need help and want to make changes in their lives. What sets my business apart is the counseling piece. We are empathic, caring and compassionate!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Florida has such a wide variety of things to do. You can go down to the Keys for fishing or a stroll on Duval Street. Miami has amazing nightclubs and restaurants to check out. Broward offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. If they wanted to be adventurous, we’d take the three hour drive up to Orlando and visit Harry Potter World or head over to Epcot for drinking and eating around the world. Just be prepared for the heat (even in the Winter months). Oh and we have alligators, hurricanes and the Florida Man.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to Joe Sanok and Alison Pidgeon from The Practice of The Practice. They have guided me in every step of my business. I started out by listening to Joe’s podcast and implementing the tools he shared in his work. Over the course of 7 years, I’ve listened to their podcasts, went to retreats and conferences they held, did a mastermind with Joe and consulting with Alison. My business would not be where it is today without their support.
