We had the good fortune of connecting with Amaya Santos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amaya, how do you think about risk?
I believe you have to get out of your comfort zone and take risk to succeed. Taking risk can be scary but you have to trust your gut and believe in yourself to take risks. Statistically, the amount of artist that are able to break through and make a successful career out of their music is very small. As an independent artist, even starting a career in music is a high risk. Knowing this, risk taking has played a big role in my career, from my style of music to the visual concepts behind it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an R&B, pop artist, I think my music is an interpretation of my roots. I love blending the soul music, r&b, pop, hiphop and Caribbean music I grew up listening to and making it all my own. Im the most proud of myself for taking the leap and starting my music career. It has been my biggest achievement, it has always been a dream of mine and to watch it become a reality has been incredible. There are many challenges that come along as an artist, specially being an independent artist. From learning to balance your time, to budgeting, marketing. I think one of the hardest is trusting yourself and not letting yourself be influenced by others opinions. Everyone will have something to say about your music, your looks, your choices but its important to stay true to yourself and do what you really love. I have learned along the way to trust myself and my vision.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Currently Im based in NYC! So much to see, so little time. It would have to depend on the friend since there is so much to do in NYC. There are so many historical landmarks, Going to museums, so many cool cafes and restaurants, parks. We would definitely have to stop by the west village for brunch at Café Cluny followed by some shopping in Soho. Having a slice of prince street pizza is a must in NY. We could check out a musical on Broadway or take the ferry to Governors Island. Would head back down to the village for dinner at Cottena.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My incredible producer who believed in me and took the time to teach me to process, believed in my vision and ideas!
