Meet Amber Scott | Cocoplum Pool Services Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Curtis and I have only been together for two and a half years. From our very first date, we knew we wanted to be together and that we wanted to live big. From that first date, we spoke about our dreams and what we wanted to achieve and accomplish in our lives. We decided that if we were going to succeed, we would have to jump right in and HUSTLE. Within six months of being together, we bought and flipped our first home. We then went on and adopted our Romanian rescue puppy, travelled Europe, worked full time jobs and jobs on the side: art commission work (paintings, illustrations and macrame), selling vintage clothing, furniture restoration, selling food at farmers markets, you name it! We saved every penny and spent the next year researching what we would need to apply for an American Visa and the pool cleaning industry. The list was so long, with so many hoops to jump through. We did all the relevant coursework and exams, did all of our own social media and website design and wrote a full business plan and visa application. We then sold our house and every single possession we owned to scrape enough funds together to show that we were serious and had substantial financial commitment and RISK. This was key to being accepted by the American Embassy. They want to see every single penny you own invested – that you are committed to succeeding and will take the opportunity seriously. So with everything on the line, we were finally able to submit our application, and thankfully we were accepted! We were on a flight out the next week and have hit the ground running. Without romantic risk, I would have never taken the leap with Curtis. Without personal risk, I would have never invested so much time and energy into a visa I may have been rejected on the spot for. Without financial risk, we would never have managed to scrape enough money together to buy the business and apply for the Visa. We are both inspired to LIVE our life to the fullest. We make sure to work hard and live hard, we are adventure and experience driven. The best of what life has to offer isn’t freely given without risk, so we choose to be brave and try every day, and the experience and success is so much sweeter for it!

What should our readers know about your business?
Cocoplum Pool Services LLC was the core of our E2 Treaty Investor Visa application. We needed a business we could work in from the bottom up; so we did our CPO course online, spent a week on the ground training, and then jumped right in. Our plan is to start right at the very beginning; to get a true understanding of the job and meet all of our clients personally, and take it from there. We’re looking to grow organically, taking on more clients as we get more exposure with being out on the road. We hope a year from now to have our first employees, to slowly start learning and offering specialized maintenance and repair work, and for one of us to be full time in the office to liaise with clients and expand the business further. With being out on the road and cleaning the pools ourselves, we want to show our clients that we are fully invested in what we do. We want to provide a quality pool service with individuals who genuinely enjoy the work that they do. After coming from cold, rainy England, we certainly feel grateful for the blue skies and sun!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are a family of foodies, so everything would probably revolve around where we are going to eat! One of our favorite weekend spots is the Yellow Green Farmers Market. They have hundreds of stalls, so guaranteed to find something for everyone. A few of our favorite dishes would be the BBQ brisket, Peruvian ceviche and fresh fruit juices. There’s always lots of live music, so a great way to spend a few hours on the weekend. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach is one of our favorite places for a beach day and swim, and stopping off at Wilton Creamery for ice cream on the way home.
We absolutely love Flamingo Gardens, one of the oldest botanical gardens in South Florida. Thousands of beautiful trees and plants, a wildlife rescue sanctuary and the historical Wray Home museum.
We have also loved our trips out to the Everglades for a classic, Floridian airboat ride or a day spent fishing and exploring the mangroves.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our success, drive and determination is absolutely inspired by my parents! We have done just as they once did – came to the US seven years ago on an E2 Investor Visa. They did the whole thing with no help, guidance or safety net, invested everything they had and moved halfway across the world for a chance at a better life. They took such an enormous risk and have worked so incredibly hard these last seven years. I was completely inspired by the leap of faith they took and all their hard work. We had been apart for ten years and had always religiously travelled out to see each other. When COVID hit, all travel was suspended and we didn’t see each other for over two years. This absolutely broke our hearts, and we decided something had to change. That life isn’t worth being without the ones you love to share it with. So we decided we needed to be brave, take a chance, and make the move to the other side of the world to be closer to them. They guided and supported us every step of the way, talked through every fear and uncertainty, and cheered us on each time we got a step closer. Their unwavering love and support, determination to live life to the fullest, and willingness to try time and time again, no matter how many times they failed or got knocked down, has completely amazed me. I feel so incredibly lucky to have them as my parents, and to now have them as neighbors!
