We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Morin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I teach people how to build the mental strength they need to reach their greatest potential. As a therapist, I spent much of my career helping people grow mentally stronger on a one-on-one basis. In 2013, I wrote an article called 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, that went viral. Over 50 million people read it and I got a book deal. I’ve since written four books on mental strength. I’ve sold over a 1 million copies of my books and they’ve been translated into more than 40 languages.
My TEDx talk, The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong, has been viewed more than 20 million times.
My goal is help people develop the skills they need to develop a healthy inner dialogue, manage uncomfortable feelings, and take positive action.
I want people to know that mental strength isn’t something you have or you don’t. It’s something you can build over time by practicing mental strength exercises on a daily basis.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was working as a therapist in rural Maine for much of my career. But I went through a series of losses in my own life that made me develop a deeper interest in mental strength. When I was 23, my mom passed away. Three years later, my 26-year-old husband died. My journey through grief led me on a quest to learn as much as I could about mental strength.
A few years later, when my father-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I wrote myself a letter about all the things mentally strong people don’t do. I needed a reminder to avoid the unhealthy habits that could hold me back.
I found the letter helpful so I published it online, hoping someone else might find it helpful too. That letter went viral and I got a book deal.
My first book, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, became an international bestseller and led to three more books in the series.
Becoming an author allowed me to pause my work as a therapist so I could start writing and speaking to bigger audiences. I decided to move to south Florida and to start building my brand with a newsletter, online course, social media presence, and a podcast.
I still teach people many of the same skills I taught in my therapy office. I just get to do it on a much larger scale now.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would show them around the Florida Keys. We’d go swimming at the sandbars and enjoy the water. We’d also visit restaurants with the most amazing views, like Sunset Grill in Marathon. I’d show them Bahia Honda and we’d snorkel at Sombrero Reef.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My publisher, HarperCollins, has supported my career as an author from day one. All four of my books have been published with them (soon to be five).
Verywell Mind has also supported my career. I began as a freelance writer for them almost a decade ago. Last year, they made me their editor-in-chief and the host of The Verywell Mind Podcast. They’re the biggest mental health website in the world.
