We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Szutowicz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Consistency is the most important thing when it comes to business. There is no such thing as instant gratification, and that’s a difficult concept for a lot of people.
I apply my dedication to fitness to my professional endeavors as an entrepreneur. This is the foundation for success–especially when you are faced with adversity, like an economic downturn. During challenging times, maintaining consistency becomes even more critical.
You must show you are both trustworthy and reliable regardless of the circumstances.
If you are your own “boss,” you must be disciplined enough to put your best foot forward each and every day.
The same holds true for fitness–you don’t always see immediate results. You just know that small increments add up over time.
What should our readers know about your business?
After my 17-year marriage ended, I struggled with emotional eating and gained a lot of weight. Even though I am a personal trainer and fitness competitor, I let the stress get the best of me.
I was 3 weeks out from a bikini competition when I filed for divorce, which sent me into a spiral of emotional eating. I consumed entire jars of peanut butter in my car and ate boxes of cookies in private.
I dropped out of the show and my weight soared.
I was devastated and, to make matters worse, I experienced homelessness and had to move in with a relative. Not long after, I was furloughed from my gym personal training job due to the pandemic.
In 2020, I launched my online fitness business, Cougar Bikini Squad, because I said I didn’t want to be the desperate divorced cougar at the bar hitting on younger men for validation. I don’t drink or go out, and that was the “advice” most people gave me to help me cope with my marriage ending. I wanted single women to have a healthy alternative.
As my business grew, I noticed my most successful clients were divorced women like me. They were inspired by my post-divorce glow-up. I decided to focus my business exclusively on helping these women achieve their goals. Not long after I dropped my “divorce weight,” I competed in 5 bodybuilding shows.
While I continue to coach clients 1:1, I developed an entire program to exclusively help divorced women. There is a belief people lose weight during divorce and that is definitely not the case for everyone.
I founded the Divorce Weight Loss Academy in 2023 because it was something I truly could have benefitted from when I was going through my separation and divorce. I had to figure out a lot on my own. My system takes the guesswork out of the transformation process.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am not really big on “going out,” but I do love spending time on the water.
I enjoy showing my out-of-town visitors the beauty of South Florida, such as a catamaran sunset cruise.
In addition, a good road trip to the Florida Keys is a fun activity. Paddleboarding is always a hit, especially when you are lucky enough to see manatees.
And of course–out beautiful beaches are always a must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people have played a role–it is hard to narrow down to just a few!
