We had the good fortune of connecting with Andy Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my own business as a means of sharing my passion with the world and also as a second stream of income to provide for my family.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Grenadian Born Photographer. ( Customs Officer by Day) I fell in love with photography way back with the little rectangular film cameras, but back then we took it to a photo studio to get the film processed, this took days sometimes before you got to see your actual photos so there was no instant gratification as with Digital photography. cameras as we know were always expensive especially for us Islanders, so when the Iphone camera came along it changed the game forever. Back in 2012 i visited Toronto for the birth of my Daughter and while there, time magazine had an article on how mobile photography changed the world. I submitted a photo of my wife and her niece and nephew, and that photo along with many others of course made the cover of Time. i was reall excited and i remember Josh (Yetman) saying to me this is not luck and its something i should take serious. I’ve been telling visual stories ever since .
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Grenada is a tiny laid back island but rich in History and Culture, there are Crater lakes Tons of amazing beaches Rivers and waterfalls. a week long trip can start with us visiting some of the historical sites like Fort George, Mathew and Frederick. The Carenage is situated at our beautiful horse shoe shaped Harbour, one of, if not the most beautiful natural Harbours in the world. we will also visit Annandale and Concord waterfalls then to the Royal Mount Carmel waterfalls. one of Grenada’s main export is Cocoa, there are about 4 factories that produce local Chocolate, most of them allow tours, so visitors can see first hand the process of chocolate making.
higher up north we can also visit River Antoine where our world famous Rivers Rum is produced, the same way it has been for almost 300 years, again there are guided tours and rum tasting. we will also Visit Belmont Estate and old Plantation estate turned into a chocolate factory and Restaurant with amazing local dishes. There are Rum shops at every turn on the island with the most interesting characters and stories you will ever experience .
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Photographer Joshua Yetman, from Minnesota but he worked here in Grenada at the Medical School his Flickr name ( Modern Day Gilligan) was a serious inspiration for my journey into photography.
