We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela la and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m originally from Flint, MI. Growing up there I never realized how different it was until I started traveling at 18 years old. No regrets because it molded me to be the person I am today. Grounded yet full of dreams. So many I’ve already fulfilled and I have so many more. Being so close to Detroit I grew up around Motown and Rock. As I grew older and started making my own way, I discovered Techno. Beyond fortunate to have experienced Detroit in the late 90s/early 2000s. We then started going to Chicago to hear House. I made the move to NY in 2004. Loving this journey centered around my love of music.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m originally from Flint, MI so you can definitely say I’ve come a long way. I learned a lot and it made me thankful for my journey. I took music classes throughout high school and college and wrote poetry as a form of self therapy. I grew up listening to Motown with my Mom and Rock with my Dad. Living so close to Detroit, I was exposed to Techno as a teen. I was immediately hooked. Soon after I started traveling to Chicago for House. At the time I didn’t realize how lucky I was being so close to the birthplaces of Techno and Chicago. Fast forward to now and I have to pinch myself, knowing that I’m now part of such a beautiful musical family. It feels great bringing my love for songwriting, singing, House and Techno together. Definitely a dream come true!
I’m excited to have 2 new releases out now! Eros by Col Lawton and V77NNY (Simon Adams remix) and I Surrender by DJ Dove (Robbie Rivera and Discoplex remix).
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d have to get some Ethiopian at Haile Bistro, my fave vegan Mexican spot Jajaja, Sant Amboeus for coffee and sandwiches, Irving Coffee for more coffee, Uva next door for pizza, The Plaza for some snacks, Mediterranean at Casa La femme, Asian fusion at Ms. Yoo and last but not least Broken Shaker for Chef Jimmy’s incredible creations while viewing the NY skyline. Central Park is a must! Beach and the rides at Coney Island too! We’d have to catch a Broadway show and maybe catch one of mine too 🙂 Art gallery hopping with a quick drink at Freeman’s. Botanica and Nurse Bettie are my fave chill lounges to get a drink at. For nightlife we’d most likely stay in the city for Lebain and Club Musica.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Dad. He started taking me to concerts at a young age. It was the biggest influence of my love for music. I meaaannnnn he took me to see Page and Plant! If you don’t know, look em up and Get the Led Out!
