We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelle M. Barrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelle M., what do you want your legacy to be?
I want to leave the legacy of someone who is kindhearted, loving, giving, patient, and gracious. I want my legacy to be TheBlackGoddesss, when people see this name, they’ll know who I am and feel the impact just from my name. I want to be remembered for the impact that I’ve made on this world once I’m gone. Yes, I am currently a creative writer, but I do want to own my own non-profits and give back to impoverished communities. I know how it feels to come from poverty, so if I can help others out in the ways that I needed help, then that is the legacy that I want to leave behind.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a creative writer and author. I recently wrote my first poetry book titled ‘Poetry of Me.’ Even though this book is filled with various poems, I do plan on diving into my creative writing side. In the future, I plan on writing songs, screenplays, and novels. My genuineness is what sets me apart from others. I am rooting for every loving, kind, and beautiful person with a passion. As long as you are gracing this earth with your passions and you want more from this world, I can always say that you can count on my support. I am most proud of my confidence and my spoken word poetry. American English is not my native language and I am not the best performative speaker, but this journey has been one of improvement and that needs to be appreciated. I am most excited about my dreams coming into reality, seeing my manifestations come alive is a thrill that is so surreal at times. God, determination, and family are the reasons why I am where I am today professionally. The constant prayers and support have truly carried me a long way. The journey may be long but it is beautiful; no it wasn’t easy but with the support in my corner, anything is achievable. I’ve overcome the challenges of shyness and low self-esteem by being patient with myself. I’ve learned that patience and grace are important when building a brand and growing in your creativeness. I want the world to know that I am not just a person who is interested in the bright lights. I want so much more for people, I want to give back and impact others in the kindest way possible. I want the world to know that TheBlackGoddesss isn’t just a name but it is a brand of confidence, love, and giving back to the community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In South Florida, there are a lot of fun things to do! I would definitely recommend South Beach when there isn’t spring break but a beach is definitely a peaceful place. Being from Jamaica, I love the swap shop because it reminds me of the market, so we would also go there to get food and shop at the different tables. We would eat at SisterSarahs, it is a seafood place and their shrimp is the best! Discovering the different hiking locations, parks, museums, and malls in south Florida is always exciting, interesting, and fun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I want to give a shoutout to my mother. She used to write a lot when she was younger, but life got busy so she barely has the time to do it now. God passed along her talents through me and I want to achieve our wildest dreams. My mom is my best friend and I speak to her about the goals that I want to accomplish in my life and she used to have similar goals, so she has supported me through everything. I also want to shout out to my close friends for supporting me and acknowledging my talents and efforts. Also, the Black FSU community is very supportive of anyone with talents so I know that some of my book sales are because of them! A very big shout out to Aja Monet, Gabrielle Union, Rihanna, and Kerry Washington! These legendary women have encouraged me in every aspect of my life and especially in writing my book. I used their books and words for inspiration through this process.
