We had the good fortune of connecting with Annie Mehesh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up I struggled with a lot of problems at home and when I didn’t know where to turn, music was always there for me. I allowed myself to heal through music and I slowly became aware of how much it would help. Then I began showing music to my mom, my sister, my friends, specific ones that I thought would resonate with them, and I started to see how they would heal through it too, how they would listen to each line and feel as if they were expressing their emotions without having to say a single word.
Pursuing a creative/artistic career is so easy because it allows me to give others authentic music that they can take with them when they love, break, heal, and grow. I am able to take my pain and create something beautiful out of it. I believe when a human being, feels anything, whether it’s love, pain, grief, happiness, we think we are alone. Music is a reminder that you aren’t alone, you aren’t the only one falling head over heels, or the only one left heartbroken, and for some reason we sit with a sense of comfort knowing that, and that is what I want to be able to provide for others.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a kid, I always enjoy singing around the house, but something else that I enjoyed doing was writing poetry. Throughout the last bit of elementary and all the way through high school I would write endless amounts of poems about anything and everything I was going through. I was very mesmerized by the ability to take my emotions and make art with them. When I was in my last year of high school, 2016, I had my first set of studio sessions and began to build my sound until the end of 2017. When the time came to release the music, it was almost like I froze, and I didn’t know where to go or what to do. I was terrified and from there my journey of building my confidence began.
Pursuing a career in this industry can be scary and it can be hard to not get in your head or compare yourself to all the other amazing and talented artists all over the world. Building up my confidence took me some time, but I am able to now look in the mirror and feel proud of who I am as an artist and what I have to offer. I let go of the idea that I had to be perfect and began to allow myself to be more free and show who I am in an authentic manner whether that’s online, or how I create my art in the studio, to even writing at home alone and being more real with myself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, it’s SUMMER!!!!! So we’d definitely be outside a lot! I’d take them to some of my favourite trails up in Hamilton, Ontario and just enjoy being surrounded by nature, the trees, the animals and the waterfalls. We’d probably spend an afternoon at a park, Trinity Bellwoods or Dovercourt Park and pack a picnic, take a bunch of cute polaroids and end the night off with some ice cream. Catch the sunset while enjoying some take out on the beach, and grab some drinks at a patio to end the week off with a spontaneous night.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mama! She has been my rock and biggest supporter through it all. She believes in me and always reminds me that there is no such thing as a dream that is too big.
