We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Blackman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The year 2017 was a pivotal year for me. I made a conscious decision to start my own business. I wanted to prove to myself and other aspiring entrepreneurs to never give up on your dreams. I saw a need to create a record label that could make a difference in the community. Then use some of the revenue to support ongoing community projects in Liberty City. In addition to creating generational wealth for my family.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Blackman Music Group’s mission is to Educate, Inspire and Entertain through music, fashion, and Hip-Hop culture. What sets us apart from other record labels is that our company does not create music that promotes death and destruction. I’m really proud of the Career In a Year song and music video created for Miami-Dade Technical College. The star rapper in the aforementioned song was a troubled teen who I’ve been mentoring for over a year.
Our business is growing because of our strong business model and Advisory Board. I have overcome many challenges; and the best lesson that I’ve learned is to never give up. Our company will continue to put people before profit.
Hip-Hop has the power to change our community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived throughout Miami-Dade County; Miami Gardens, Overtown, Liberty City and South Beach. Like 2pac “I get around”, LOL. Miami-Dade County has so many places to see. When I have family or friends in town, I always take them to the House of Wings in Overtown.; Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park and South Beach. I also like to take them to the Historic Black areas of Miami such as Virginia Key Beach, Overtown, The Black Archives/Lyric Theater, The Hampton House and the Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall Social & Economic Institute in Brownsville. As well as taking them to Nobu on South Beach for dinner.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Blackman Music Group, Inc Advisory Board who help us to continue to grow and create revenue and make a difference in our community. S/O to our Lead Organizer Leroy Jones and the Circle of Brotherhood, Inc who I have the privilege and honor to serve as an executive member since 2012 and one of the hunger 9 members who in March 2019 went on a 21 1/2 day hunger strike against gun violence in Liberty City . (Black Men Solving Our Own Community Problems.) Many others have helped me over the years. Too many to name I’m grateful for all the love and support I received since I started my company.
