We had the good fortune of connecting with April E Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success is a journey of trial-and-error. It is not one point in time, but a series of goals that are set and the actions that get you to your goals. Mary Kay says, “We fail forward to success.” That is such a profound statement. And success only comes when you don’t give up.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Being a beauty consultant is rewarding and fun because I get to build relationships with people and the products backed by Mary Kay is simply the mechanism used to build those relationships. I am most excited to have just earned my first of many Mary Kay career cars! My team and I earned that car through work and persistence, but more importantly, goal setting and having a plan of action is why I am where I am in my business today. I have been using the products for over 20 years and that is one thing that sets me apart from other people in the industry inside and outside of Mary Kay. I not only sell the products, I use them, and I study the skin so I understand the science behind what I recommend to my clients for their skin.
I am where I am today for several reasons; 1. because of the resources and knowledge provided by Mary Kay, 2. my unwavering support system, 3. regular old-fashioned work, and 4. belief. It has not been easy. My biggest challenge has been myself. Sometimes my belief in me hasn’t been where it needs to be and I have to always remember to stay centered and remind myself of all the things I have accomplished and understand that I CAN always do whatever I envision.
Never giving up has been the biggest lesson I have learned. Don’t give up and work all the way until the end. Great things happen in that final quarter.
In Mary Kay, we are celebrating the company’s 60th anniversary this year. The longevity the company has had in the many different climates over the past 6 decades shows they definitely have a winning formula for success. Owning your own business in Mary Kay makes you a better business owner and a better overall person. It teaches you business skills that most of us pay big money to learn in school. The company understands that you cannot separate your business and your personal life. It teaches us balance through faith first, family second, and career third the way it should be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to do and see here in sunny South Florida! We definitely would do Fort Lauderdale Beach without a doubt. I love it on the weekend when the vendors have their booths set up in the park. For food, I love Shooters; it’s a mix of the food and the ambience for me.
Hopefully, it would be a week when Sofar Sounds is having a concert. I have been to a few sets and it is a great vibe with some really amazing local talents.
For a fantastic day party and good food, we would have to do Beyond Brunch Sundays.
At some point, I like to head to Miami to Shot Calla’s Rentals to rent some fun toys and hang out in Miami or the Keys on the water or on land.
And while in Miami, I always take my friend’s to Dion Atelier down in South Beach. I love his pieces and you won’t find everyone with your same outfit when you shop with Dion.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who deserve a shoutout; my Mary Kay sisters, my family, my friends, my clients, and my networking group. They have all been instrumental in pouring into me and my business in some way. I receive so much support from them all in so many different ways. I have to give a special shoutout to my sister Nichelle who encourages me when I need it and also gives me a kick in the pants when I need that too. She reminds me to stay focused on my dream no matter what.
