We had the good fortune of connecting with April Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I worked as a CFO for a marina/restaurant management company for 15 years before starting my own company. I learned so much during that time that helped me have the experience and knowledge to launch my own business. However, it also taught me how much I wanted that work/life balance. I work 100% virtually, serving clients all across the country. I have so much more flexibility now to enjoy the things I love and spend time with my family. If we want to travel, as long as I have my laptop and calculator, I am good to go!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Right after I started my business, COVID happened and my clients were immediately in panic mode about how to keep their businesses afloat. I learned all I could about grants and offerings to assist them. I truly love helping small businesses. Their wins are my wins. I love what I do.

 

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I named my business Sand Dollar Bookkeeping because although I serve clients all across the country virtually, I am located in sunny SWFL. Sand Dollar I thought, was such a cute play on money. Our beaches, although still recovering from hurricane Ian, are some of the best in the state/country. I love dining downtown Fort Myers at the historic Veranda restaurant. The Edison home is also a wonderful place to visit with so much history and the grounds are beautiful.

 

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was encouraged to start my own business from Sandra Stilwell Youngquist, a client, friend, and woman I look up to, She sent me an email stating “hey why don’t you start your own bookkeeping business.” I think I thought about it for 12 hours and then filed my llc!
