We had the good fortune of connecting with Araceli Poma and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Araceli, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Through my singing and the essence of Afro-Andean Funk, the movement I am deeply passionate about, I’m answering a calling that goes beyond entertainment—it’s about cultural preservation, social advocacy, and bridging diverse communities with the universal language of music.
This journey is not just about performing; it’s about carrying forward the legacy and stories of our ancestors, their struggles, and triumphs, and weaving these narratives into the music we create. It’s a commitment to ensuring that these rich histories and traditions remain vibrant and meaningful in today’s global conversation.
Our mission is deeply humanistic, aimed at amplifying voices that have been historically marginalized and silenced. It’s a path filled with both heartache and inspiration as we share the resilience of indigenous and Afro-Andean communities through our songs. Our music is a platform for these stories, presenting them not as forgotten lore but as living, pulsating realities that demand recognition and respect.
Engaging with communities, particularly through educational initiatives, amplifies our impact. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about witnessing the moment of connection when someone truly feels the depth of another culture through our music or workshops. These moments transcend mere musical appreciation, fostering a deeper empathy and bond among diverse groups of people.
Tackling social issues through our lyrics and themes is both a responsibility and a necessity. Our music is a conduit to highlight injustices, provoke thoughtful conversation, and celebrate the beauty of diversity. We proudly incorporate elements of Quechua, the language of my ancestors, into our music, ensuring its preservation and honoring its significance in our cultural heritage.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a fusion of my country’s rich cultural heritage, Peru, with contemporary sounds and messages of social impact. What sets me apart is my commitment to preserving culture and bridging different communities through music. I am particularly proud of being nominated for two Latin Grammy awards, which is recognition of my efforts to highlight Peru’s musical diversity.
Getting to where I am today professionally has been a journey filled with challenges. It wasn’t easy, but each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons. I learned to persevere, adapt, and seek opportunities even in difficult times. My family, my passion for music, and my commitment to my culture have been my main drivers.
What I want the world to know about me and my story is that my art goes beyond music. It is a tool to promote equality, inclusion, and respect for the diverse cultures of the world. My goal is to inspire others through my music and make a positive impact on society.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a city as beautiful and diverse as New York, where you can find art everywhere you look. I would take them to a Peruvian restaurant, one of my favorite Turkish restaurants, and end the night with a show at the Blue Note. Definitely, we would also stroll through all the impressive museums there are, and the Chinatown neighborhood that I really like. We couldn’t miss the salsa night and seeing a concert by a prominent artist like Angelique Kidjo.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this acknowledgment to my grandmothers, who are the true source of my pride and inspiration. Their legacy of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love has been instrumental in my life and career. Thanks to them, I have learned the value of our traditions and the power of the Quechua language, which they have passed down with such affection and dedication. Their presence and constant support are a beacon of light on my path, and I am eternally grateful for all they have done for me.
