We had the good fortune of connecting with Artrice Shepherd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Artrice, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think about risk in the same way I think about wanting to help those who can’t help themselves. Even if I don’t have all of the answers, I can learn from what I don’t know that can help me later down the line. I take risks, because I don’t live with regrets. I take risks to push the limits and defy the odds of being a Black girl in a world not meant to protect or celebrate me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a crisis communications strategist. I love who I’m becoming in my career. I’m still very early in my career and I am learning everyday. I didn’t become a communications strategist by chance, I worked for it. It wasn’t easy but I took a bet on myself and made the sacrifices to show up every day.
The women who inspire me, all have one thing in common, they never stopped evolving. They changed with the times. They broke glass ceilings because they knew they could. They brought people with them and never forgot who they were at their core. That is why my professional life is thriving. I am willing to learn, I push to think beyond the walls of my imagination, and my foundation keeps me centered through it all.
Sure, I had moments where I doubted my ability, but the risk I was taking by counting myself out was bigger than the risk of trying and failing. And I failed. You don’t get to where you want to be without having moments that scare you. I am the most proud of not giving up on myself. I made some promises to myself that I wasn’t willing to go back on. So even as it became more difficult, I still showed up.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love Brickell! Brickell is MY PERSONAL bread and butter. However, the Wynwood Art District has some amazing murals, museums and galleries that any person would love. For food, I am taking my friend to Yardbird Southern Table and Bar and R House Wynwood for the awesome brunch entertainment.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If you’re lucky, the village you create will be the foundation of your success. The most influential part of my journey has included God, my parents, friends, and my mentors. My faith has guided me along every step I make and has made it possible for me to courageously do the things that challenge and excite me. My parents have been the ones to support me through it ALL. I know they are there to catch me if I fall and that is something I will be forever grateful for. My friends are just as hard-working as I am. We celebrate and work with each other to develop projects and give back to our community. Lastly my mentors are the cherry on top of this amazing sundae. My mentors force me to go beyond my comfort zone EVERY time and they’re usually right. Whenever I feel inadequate, they are there to remind me of my purpose and all those attached to it.
