We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlee Fowler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashlee, how do you think about risk?
Taking risk is the only reason I’ve come this far. The risk of choosing a career path that doesn’t follow the norm of attending college, the risk of quitting my job and working freelance, the risk of being unsuccessful. Every risk I took started to unlock doors I didn’t even consider. Scott Barnes and Victoria Duke for example, are both celebrity makeup artist working with Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Miss Universe, just to name a few. I would always think to myself- how did they get there? I can tell you, it wasn’t by seeing their consistent clientele every week to the pay the bills. They took risk!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hair and makeup artistry has always been a passion of mine. As a child, I remember watching TV shows like Hannah Montana, specifically because I loved her hair & makeup. While working at my first salon, I realized I need to set myself apart. My first salon job set the level of expectation I have for myself, and the quality of work I want every client to receive. Having those high expectations fresh out of school wasn’t the most ideal, it was extremely challenging and stressful. But I am so grateful for it, because I never doubted if this career path was from me. It instilled the drive for success. That drive for success continues to stay with me.

Through the challenges, I learned it’s important to envision your ultimate goal. When you hold onto your dream, it draws your attention to the goal rather the obstacles.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my most favorite things to do is Sandbar Sunday. Whether it’s Boca, Ft. Lauderdale, or Miami, enjoying the water is always a fun time. The following day have a full glam makeover with Scott Barnes, Victoria Duke, and photoshoot with Carlos Velez.
Day trip over to the Florida Keys and experience Alligator Reef, visit the Key Lime Pie Factory, dinner at Mrs. Macs Kitchen (best fish tacos ever) and drinks at a local bar.
Another day trip over to Marco Island with full day beach day, take a visit to the Marriott and grab a Pina Colada, then watch the most beautiful sunset on the water.
Of course a shopping day at the Brickell City Centre, walk around Wynwood and grab donuts at The Salty Donut, and night out at El Tucan.
Boatride at Fort Lauderdale inlet, watch the sunset, and grab food 15th Street Fisheries.
Lastly would love to grab coffee at The Alchemist, in Wilton Manors, rent bikes and ride down Hollywood Beach Boardwalk.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The ones that deserve all the credit are the team at Academy of Glam. They truly are the ones that gave me the knowledge and support I needed while establishing my career.
