We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Aarons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Jamaica. It has such a rich and vibrant culture that is difficult to not be affected by it. My mother was also an artist and filled our home with art and brightly colored walls. She was always my biggest fan and made sure to take me to art fairs and taught me everything she knew. I think all these factors really affected the way I paint and use colors as well as my varied interests and styles.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I paint portraits and I like to think that its my technique or paint application as well as the colors I use that set me apart from others. I’m most proud of my journey so far and that I haven’t given up. Getting to this point has been a anything but a straight road, but one with lots of twists, turns and detours. But art has always been my passion so I just try my best to persevere. I’d say one of the greatest lessons I’m still trying to learn, is that even though you may make a mistake in a creation try not to dwell on it, if you only focus on the mistakes you’ll never see the bigger picture. I would love the world to know that I’m here trying to represent my culture and people of color.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my family, they are always very supportive of my dreams.
