We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
I would get a real thrill if my hand drawn characters were known throughout the world one day. Whether that be through children’s books, animation or even just via viral social media posts… the way we consume art is changing so rapidly, that I’m completely open to the ‘How’ of my goal. If I could sprinkle the love I feel while creating my art as far as possible – that would mean true success to me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Ashley Lucas, but I made the decision to go by ‘Lady Lucas’ about 15 years ago because there are so many people in the world with my first and last name! I also love alliteration, and the theme of using the same letter in titles comes up a lot in my work.

Being a professional artist for most of my adult life hasn’t been easy. You realize pretty early on that there is one person in the world that is going to champion for you every single day – and that is yourself. You have to be willing to take on that responsiblity and really wrap your head around it if you wish to succeed.

My brand has evolved over the years, but the constant theme is that my work is whimsical and cute – and it is always inspired directly by animals and nature. Never more so than in the present moment, as my new art brand, ‘Sook & Hook’ incorporates my hand drawn watercolors with real pieces of sea glass tossed and turned by the ocean. I literally think of the ocean / aka nature as my business partner! I love her – and I respect her greatly.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Both of my parents are artists, and they gave me the room to pursue my passion since birth. They encouraged me during every little phase of my childhood fascinations. One day I was destined to be a miniaturist – and the next I was taking on fashion illustration. I was so interested in so many things, and had the room to move through each year of my childhood, teen and college years with a mother and a father who gave me the encouragement to succeed. I am STILL evolving and changing at 40 years old – and they are just as interested now in my current role as a sea glass artist, as they were when I was 8 years old and selling beads made out of polymer clay!
