We had the good fortune of connecting with Asulprusia Elizabeth Echemendia & Jose Arellano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asulprusia, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
We became parents at a young age, we were both studying at college (and deeply in love with each other). When we realized we were having a baby, we decided that the best teaching we could gift him would be to follow our dreams, while enjoying the paternity. We didn’t wanted for him to feel like having children was any type of badge that would make us sacrifice our dreams, but the opposite. He would be the best friend at our side, adding even more happiness. We kept studying architecture (Jose) and fine arts (Eli/me), while developed a photography business together that would allow us to be our own bosses and implement the knowledge of our careers. Photography had always been one of our bigger passions. Today, our son Gael is 10 years old, and we also have an (almost) 1 year old baby. We really wish one day they will see themselves as the motor that kept us in track of pursuing the life full of joy that We (and They) deserve.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a photography duo definitely made it easier for us, since we both have different abilities, that together close the puzzle. Whenever times had been hard and one of us felt down, the other was always lifting. We started doing digital photography but eventually fell in love with the older way, so nowadays we shoot all in film.

From our beginnings we felt just amused by human figure & portraits (they are a way to connect and interact and understand; we love nourishing ourselves with new perspectives), and did a lot of personal test shoots, but then we started to be reached out by commercial brands, they loved we would always keep a really effortless, sensible and not pushed aesthetic. Being photographers is a delight; we love to be on set, and are very appreciative of every shoot we’ve made, because they have lead us to become better artists each time

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, for us it is all about art, food and photos! I’ll fit the itinerary in a day!

Let’s have brunch at Krus (Coconut Grove)
Coffee at Books and books (Coral Gables), while reading a good book
For lunch, let’s order a ramen at 1800 Lucky (in Wynwood), and then enjoy a beautiful walk around to visit art shops and discover local artists
For dinner: Cafe Pastis (in South Miami (order the lamb with lentils)) or Los Félix (Coconut Grove).
And one of the most special night outs our family has enjoyed, Wednesdays of Open Mic to enjoy local poets, musicians and performers (literally anyone can perform!) at Tea & Poets, Sunset Place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We deserve pretty much of that credit because of our vision and resilience and efforts for becoming better professionals every day 🙂 (I also think when you do what you love you have more chances of succeeding)

Our children deserve a lot of that credit too, if not the biggest part!

I guess the first photography video we watched together (we are self taught photographers), from the National Geographic photographer, Joel Sartore, deserves some credit too (I feel nostalgic to remember it)
