We had the good fortune of connecting with Augusto Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Augusto, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me, success is defined by the ability to do what I love every day, immersed in the world of film, embracing new adventures, meeting fascinating people, and applying my expertise to each project.
The chance to collaborate with talented artists provides a continuous learning experience and is at the core of my professional fulfillment.
This passion for creativity and collaboration is precisely why Black Mambo Films was founded.
At Black Mambo Films, we measure success not just by numbers or accolades but by the satisfaction of delivering exceptional work. While we have achieved numerous milestones, we are now venturing into an exciting new chapter: filmmaking. Our upcoming project, an animated short film titled “Where is Berlin,” represents our commitment to innovation and creativity. We look forward to showcasing the dedication and talent of our team at film festivals and sharing our passion with a wider audience.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve built my career as a filmmaker, but storytelling is in my DNA. From the very beginning, my creativity has distinguished me from others. For over 20 years, I’ve been exploring the boundaries of film and media, from projecting live visuals on walls during musical performances to envisioning worlds where animation makes anything possible.
It’s been a challenging journey, one that demands constant adaptation to ever-evolving technology. But I believe in innovation, in evoking emotions through narratives, and in crafting projects that highlight the essence of the artists and collaborators who have been with me from the start.
My latest project, Where is Berlin, is an animated short film set in the near future. In collaboration with visual artist Eniatt, we’ve created a world that encapsulates years of experimentation, merging them into a singular piece of art. After four years in the making, Where is Berlin is now in post-production and will soon be hitting the festival circuit.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m pretty simple when it comes to my favorite spots. I take my coffee at Imperial Moto, the perfect place to work. When my dad used to visit, we’d grab a burger at Kush, stroll around Wynwood, and end up at Walt Grace to admire the classic cars and guitars.
Most of the time, when I go out with my family, we head to Mister 01 in Wynwood for pizza, enjoy Sunday music for kids at Zey Key, or go record shopping at Lucky Records in 1800 Lucky. Miami always has something interactive to offer, like the Balloon Museum, Superblue, or Artechouse in Miami Beach. I’m always up for those experiences.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my wife, Laura Daza, whose unwavering support and collaboration have been instrumental in turning my ideas into reality. Her dedication and partnership in producing and working alongside me have been invaluable.
