We had the good fortune of connecting with Avi Bagley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Avi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was frustrated with the way the physical therapy profession was progressing and the model is currently had. I wanted to make and be a change for the profession and for medicine as a whole, focusing solely on one-one patient centered healing focused care. I wanted in short, to practice the way I was taught and the way I felt most passionate about without running into the hurdles of traditional factory style clinics. In short I got into my profession to help people and I wanted to work with that goal always in mind.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I created Bagley Physical Therapy Health and Wellness with the goal of combating low quality healthcare specifically in my profession of physical therapy, but also more broadly with rehabilitation and pain management medicine as a whole. I wanted to combat the low quality non-pt centric or goal oriented, and money centered care we typically encounter and create a more patient centric, healing centered bedside focused system. With this focus, I am not only able to see patients 1-1 for over an hour, but I am also able to see them less visits, on average 4-6 and sometimes as few as 1-2 with excellent outcomes. The challenges in the beginning for me came with the business aspect, a part that I was completely unfamiliar with. With the help of a lot of people, and a lot of mistakes, I was able to learn and build and continue to do so. The biggest lesson broadly I have learned is that being genuine and honest goes a long way and learning from mistakes and not letting those mistakes destroy you, makes you better as a person as well as in business. I hope that people will see the results I am achieving and will notice and start to make a change in their thinking and start focusing more on the person in front of them than the dollar sign they represent.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, this is probably an easier one for me to answer as I live in South Florida and there is no shortage of things to do and there is really no way to go wrong. But for me personally, I love the Miami art and culture and I would definitely recommend checking out Wynwood area of Miami where there are tons of cool bars, restaurants, breweries and hippie art and graffiti. After that, well you would have to take advantage of South florida weather, rent a boat, or paddleboard and hit some of the sandbars around the area. Then at night, no shortage of clubs and nightclubs but I personally prefer a more laid back atmosphere and again there are no shortage of chill bars on the beach and live music. In short, it would be hard to specifically narrow down, but there is definitely something for everyone.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have been so important to my journey. But I would say the most important one who really believed in me from the beginning and who I absolutely could not have done this without was my good friend and the person who essentially created my business, Katie Szuba. She works in management as well as running with her husband, her own website called TheSowell.com. She is an amazing person and an unbelievable friend and business person.
