We had the good fortune of connecting with Bea Pernia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bea, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Since a young age, my life has been defined by taking risks at a personal and professional level. These have made me evolve and transform, and experience situations that I would have never achieved otherwise. They have made it easier for me to come up with ideas and innovations that I was too scared to try and test before, and they have definitely made me who I am today.
Professionally, I began my first interior design project, but felt that I was not completely ready. I needed experience; however, I took the opportunity and this, in return, developed into a chain of projects coming one after the other. When I decided to take my first studio space and hire employees back in 2010, I was not at a level to afford it, but I always thought if I had this motivation, I would do anything to be able to cover my expenses, and so I did.
My first furniture line, ATUS, was created with passion, and I loved every piece for its design and functionality; however, I did not know what the feedback would be. I just finished exhibiting it at Design Miami, and the response from galleries, collectors, and professional colleagues in the industry has exceeded my expectations. In my designs in general, I love to take risks and push my creativity. Once I complete the design process, I will find the ways to make it happen.
Overall, there is a big responsibility in taking risks. Choosing wisely and having a clear vision of your final results will make the path successful. Risk motivates me to excel, and even when the outcome has not necessarily been purely positive, it has made me evolve as a person and as a professional.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Since I was little I have always had a passion for creating in general, be it music or spaces. I started as a musician, and my passion for creativity transitioned to interior design around the year 2010. In 2012 I founded Bea Interiors Design, a design studio in Miami’s design district and since then I have had the pleasure of developing many residential, commercial and hospitality projects throughout the US, the Caribbean and Mexico and, now I just finished my first furniture line, Atus.
I am very proud of the company I have created which has had immense growth since I started it. Even though I might fall into a “business / firm” category, I think of myself as an artist / creative and I am generally approached for my artistic and creative vision regarding the spaces I design.
It was not necessarily easy to get where I am currently at, it has been a road filled with learnings and evolution but I can say that, overall, it has been a fluid process. Any challenges I might have faced, have been all taken with serenity and looking for solutions rather than getting stuck in the problem. I have an amazing team of creatives and professionals and together we always find solutions to any of the challenges we face.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite city in the world is Paris. I would arrange a weekend in this magical city filled with cultural visits to museums, walks on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and throughout the city to admire its impressive architecture and of course, lunch or dinner in the famous brasserie L’entrecôte de Paris.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Bea Interiors Design Team, they are hard-working, creative, committed and understand my vision.
