We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Stelter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The world is full of incredible people that no one knows. As a filmmaker, my mission is to provide a platform for them to share their stories, inspire others, and help lead the world one step in a better direction.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sedulo Media is a video production business with two components. First, we focus on social media marketing, specifically aimed at growing personal brands. We help businesses expand their personal brands with authentic and consistent social media content. We cover everything from scripting and video ideation to filming, editing, and scheduling social media for the small group of brands we work with. One thing that sets us apart is that we film on location and provide creative direction to produce a month’s worth of social media content in less than a day. The second part of our business is nonprofit documentary filmmaking. We believe there are incredible stories that need to be told, and each year, we aim to produce several documentaries, whether they are 5 minutes or feature-length films. The photo you see at the top of this article is from the premiere of our first feature-length film, Be Great, a basketball documentary about role models, brotherhood, and believing in yourself. This career has taught me several lessons about balancing art and business. As an artist, creating social media content can feel like playing the same note over and over, which becomes monotonous. Having a part of our business dedicated to documentary filmmaking gives us the freedom to refuel our creative flow, tell new stories, and inspire others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to take people is the Pérez Art Museum or the Design District. When it comes to food, Lung Yai Thai Tapas is my favorite spot in Miami. To end the day, it’s only right to wind down at one of the beaches or take a drive through the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to The Creative Act by Rick Rubin, which has been a major source of inspiration for me. In his book, Rubin says, “The goal of art isn’t to attain perfection. The goal is to share who we are and how we see the world.” Living in a fast-paced city like Miami and an even faster-growing social media world, so many talented people are chasing the perfect photo, video, or design to share. For many, including myself, this pressure prevents them from hitting record, sharing their bold ideas, or fully expressing themselves. I felt this for years—I created beautiful videos for others but struggled to tell my own story. His book helped me break free from these limiting beliefs and allowed me to create my first feature-length film and grow my video production business. Now, I embrace imperfection in everything I create and help others feel comfortable on camera by being true to themselves.
