We had the good fortune of connecting with Berwick Augustin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Berwick, why did you pursue a creative career?
I don’t believe I chose an artistic or creative career, I believe it chose me. God has wired every living soul with unique abilities to do different things. Although I was highly involved in sports growing up, I always enjoyed the arts. Writing was something that came natural to me. I didn’t struggle to write research papers and essays. I only wrote when it was necessary. I wish someone would’ve helped me nurture the skill at an early age.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Evoke180 is a literary and performing arts company. It has birthed multiple subsidiaries over the years. We have a full publishing section, an educational component that provides training to students, teachers, and parents. We provide motivational and keynote speaking, especially to the youth. Most recently, we created Native Legacy that focuses on bilingual (Haitian-Creole/English) resources for children ages 0-10 years old.
The thing that sets up apart is our multilingual and multicultural diversity. We’re able to reach people in different places with various content. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to use my platform to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others. At the end of the day, spiritual fulfilment is by far the most important aspect of life.
Business wise, I started as a full time artist writing plays, poetry, and performing on stages across the country. I was also the drama team director at my church. The productions evolved into community theater and open mics. That’s when the company was established. The road was not easy at all. It included a lot of bumps, hardships, and financial setbacks. With God’s help and my village, I was able to overcome challenges. The level of support and encouragement propelled me to continue when I felt like giving up. Most importantly, I know that my purpose is bigger than me.
I’ve learned a ton of lessons along the way. God has a calling on everybody’s life. He strategically placed all of us on this planet to advance His kingdom’s agenda. I’m also convinced that character, hard work, and consistency will open the doors you need to fulfill your destiny. Moreover, I’ve learned that having a mentor is a wise and effective way to do life and business.
I want the world to know that I strive to do everything in excellence because whatever I’m privileged to do is my gift back to God for gifting me with life and artistic tools.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a best friend was visiting the area, I’ll definitely take them to tours throughout South Florida to learn the history of the surrounding cities. There is so much cultural content that are not necessarily taught in schools I believe people need to know. I would definitely take my friend to eat at KC Healthy Cooking and other Haitian restaurants. I know this is a biased statement, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another culture with food that taste better. Of course, we would check out performances at a local theaters and open mic venues. If the weather permits, we’d cruise over to Hollywood beach to enjoy the beautiful beaches, the boardwalk, restaurants, and seasonal activities. The Shops at Pembroke Gardens is also a nice hangout spot that has an outdoor mall and a plethora of restaurants/entertainment.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Any success that I’ve had in my lifetime has been due to God’s grace, favor, and the assistance of family and close friends. It’s hard to pin point one person. Since I’ve been married, my wife, Gretchen, has definitely been my helper and constant supporter on many levels. My three beautiful children also keep me on my toes and motivate me to push through difficult times. Additionally, my immediate family has helped me sustain through the years. Lastly, I’ve been blessed with a closed knit team at Evoke180 who has backed me up to be able to succeed.
