We had the good fortune of connecting with Bianca N. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bianca, how do you think about risk?
I believe taking a risk will many times be the thing that elevates my brand. My motto regarding taking risks has always been, “What’s the worst thing that can happen? Either they say no and you end up back where you are now or they say yes and you gain. You don’t lose anything, so go for it!
Taking risks as an influencer has definitely allowed me to build a genuine community and also build rapport with brands to create long term partnerships. I am willing to step out on faith and although at times it can be nerve wrecking the reward on the other side of the hurdle is well worth it!
When I look back over my journey as a natural hair influencer, I took a risk to start fresh at zero followers when I created my instagram platform back in July 2020. We are now over 12k followers 1.5years later. I can only imagine where I would have been if I waited any longer to start my platform or even if I would have taken the risk earlier on in my career.
If you are reading this and happen to be nervous about taking that risk in your life/career, my advice would be to go for it!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what truly sets me apart from others is that I have a background in Chemistry and I am currently a Pharmacist. I share my journey of the education required to get to where I am today on my YouTube platform; however, on Instagram I focus heavily on natural hair.
A little background about my career:
I completed undergraduate degree at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA and pharmacy school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA for a total of 8 years before obtaining my doctoral degree in Pharmacy. I would not say my journey was easy, but it is definitely doable and I want black and brown students who look like me to understand, “they can too!”
As a content creator I use multiple social media platforms to share everything I know regarding natural hair, but I also showcase pharmacy content and lifestyle on my YouTube platform. I want my supporters to know that work-life balance can be achieved and you can tap into ALL of the things that make your heart smile. For me those would be pharmacy and natural hair.
One lesson I have learned along this journey is that you will never be “ready.” I remember waiting and waiting to start my YouTube channel or delaying content because the quality was off or I had a spot on my shirt that I didn’t realize until I was editing, etc. What I have come to understand is although I am on a public platform, at the end of the day I am human just like everyone else so it is okay for things to happen unexpectedly. I roll with the punches and focus on the things I can control.
My story is one of a natural girl who happens to be a doctor creating a platform which has evolved. A place to highlight my favorite hairstyles and products has now become a family of “cousins” (what I like to refer to my followers as), and a safe space where I welcome all questions and lend a helping hand or encouraging words to those who need it. Yes, I absolutely love being a pharmacist and pouring back into pharmacy students and patients; however, I also have a love for content creation.
What do I want the world to know about my story? I want the world to normalize working a 9-5 career and also coming home to pour into your own brand.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming to visit, I would take them to Fahrenheit rooftop in Charlotte, NC. The views are AMAZING and of course lots of photo opportunities.
I am a lover of all things Mexican, so I would definitely make sure we stop by a Mexican spot–Margarita with sugar on the rim please! For a quick pick me up, I would swing by CAVA and create a nice bowl with lamb, cucumbers, hummus, roasted eggplants, roasted veggies, and so much more!
During the summer I enjoy going to the amusement park, so we would make our way to Carowinds. Once we got home from a long day at the park I would have some wine and a charcuterie board ready to sit out on the back patio and catch up and watch some shows.
For a game day/night I would go to Puttery in Charlotte for an adults putt putt golf experience with great music, drinks and food. I would make sure she doesn’t leave without us visiting the Childress winery in Lexington, NC. I absolutely love this winery and they have wine tastings throughout the day as well as one of my favorite wines, Muscadine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story is not my own, as I have many supportive friends and family that helped me get to where I am today. My mom actually helped me create the name “doctormycurls” which I believe will live on for many years to come and elevate into its own brand. Every time I call with good news, she is right there celebrating with me!
Outside of family, my instagram natural hair community has been extremely supportive! I have been able to create a network of like minded individuals to discuss hurdles, successes, etc. within a virtual space. I truly feel like I know these women even though I have not met any of them in person! We bounce ideas off of one another, share helpful apps, processes, and systems we have in place and the love is genuine!
I cannot close this shoutout without acknowledging my amazing husband, Jonathan. I am SO thankful for the encouragement of my husband from day one.
Outside of being a listening ear, he is always making sure my equipment and lighting is correct and my camera quality is crisp. He is always right there when I am frustrated and jumps right in without hesitation to help me tie loose ends and provide constructive feedback. He definitely understands my passion for content creation and pours into my brand just as much as I do.
I think we can all agree that everyone needs a personal hype man. Hands down that would have to be my brother, Juan. He is always in my corner supporting and cheering me on! He may not have one interest in natural hair, but he will always ask, “what video do you have coming out next?” The high energy that he brings makes me even more excited and reminds me of the impact that I have made by creating helpful content for those who need it most. Thanks bro boy!
My success is a reflection of my support system. All of these people listed above and so many others deserve credit and recognition in my story, so I thank you all so much!!
