We had the good fortune of connecting with Bill Reicherter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bill, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk to me is the baseline of how you view success. As we all know, without risk there is no real reward but you have to look at risk in a way that comes down to what can your gut handle. If you go back in time to the companies that shaped America like Kraft, Hersheys, Kellogg’s etc… they all have one thing in common they failed forward and risked everything to go forward. Now I am not saying you have to risk everything, but if you believe in what your doing, then you have to weigh out the risk, what am I willing to risk to get this reward, knowing the reward is not guaranteed. For me, I believed so much in my abilities, I risked it all to make it and I will tell you, it wasn’t easy. Some days I didn’t know how I was going to pay the electric, food, cars, house, etc but I believed so deeply in myself and my mission that I knew if I gave up, I wouldn’t be able to look myself in the mirror. So risk is a personal measure of a persons fortitude.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Let me start by saying, my brand started in a spare bedroom with only a cell phone, computer and a fax. From that room, I started the business and brand of BR Signs, Inc. Dba Priority 1 Signs. I had no business plan and no fancy resume. I had guts and nerves of steel. I went into an industry I had no knowledge of and built a company that 26 years later was rated number one by the prime buyers report in every city in the USA. Lessons learned, work in the field you want to be in before going into business blind. The learning curve took me 5 years just to understand the business to be able to turn a profit. Second, when you make hires, always find people smarter then you in the industry, they will make your life easier and third, do not take shortcuts as they ultimately become the longest way to get from A to B and the most expensive. I knew, I had no doubt and I have the vision of what my company would look like in 5 -10-15-20 years and was able to achieve it. Employees are the key to my success. I always realized I had no business without two key ingredients, clients and loyal employees. So I focused heavily on both and I always considered myself a coworker not the owner in their presence. And I worked as hard, alongside and in front of my staff all the time. I never asked or expected them to do something I wasn’t willing to do. Very important key to success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First I would take them to the design district Miami for shopping and food. What an amazing place to show the diversity of Miami. Next I would take them to Brickell and just walk the area. All the amazing food and shopping. One of my favorite places to stay is the Mandrian Oriental on Brickell Key. Great atmosphere, Lar Mar restaurant is amazing as well as the private beach and pool area. Then I would take them to a game to watch either the Heat, Dolphins, Marlins or Panthers, whoever is playing at the time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two people that deserve a shout out to my success! First my father. My father was a military man, old school immigrant from Naples, Italy that was a hard worker and self made. At an early age, my father was dealt a life long battle with cancer, still has it and I was thrown into learning and handling business as a kid. While most kids where enjoying life I was working and running his business for the family. That experience shaped by future, my drive for success and my need to create opportunities for others through employment in my company or mentoring others in business to be successful. Second person was Ray Titus the Founder of Sign-A-Rama. On a plane one day, Ray handed me a book to read called who moved my cheese by Spencer’s Johnson. That book ultimately spoke to me and created the entrepreneur I am today. Without that book, I am not sure if I would have made it.
