We had the good fortune of connecting with Bismarie Plasencia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bismarie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In February of 2021, I was laid off from my first full-time job. It felt like a setback in my career. Through necessity, I gained drive and passion. I quickly began searching for new work, but as fate would have it, a client recommended three more potential clients to me. Soon, I was handling several client accounts, and it became clear this could be my new full-time job and I would be able to start my own agency.
My name is Bismarie Plasencia and I am a 24-year-old and Cuban-American from Miami, FL. I graduated from the University of Florida with my Bachelor of Science in Advertising and my Master of Science in Entrepreneurship. I’ve always had a positive, driven attitude that inspires me to want to lead. I love to enter a setting and stimulate it with new and innovative ideas. I am known for my positivity and high energy.
The start of my business. I was unaware of it at the time, but following my Master’s degree graduation in the summer of 2020, I took on my first freelance client, which was a telehealth hematologist. That was the first business to have faith in me and my marketing services. Shortly after my graduation I accepted a full-time position at an ad agency (the agency I was later laid off from), but I never stopped working with the telehealth client as its freelance marketing consultant.
Humble beginnings. As I continued to onboard more clients, I required a setting for work. I turned a section of my family room into my office and began helping my clients grow.
I immediately started brainstorming a name. A company’s name is crucial to a business because it is the center of your brand. The name-selecting process took about a month, and I sent out two rounds of surveys to see which name resonated better with audiences. Finally, in late April, I decided on GetBissy Marketing. Not only was it a play on my name, Bismarie, but it also represented who we were as an advertising agency. I wanted to help turn businesses into busier and better brands. So, we were getting busy as an agency and for our clients.
When more work started coming in, I knew I needed a strong team to produce high-quality work. I knew exactly who I wanted on my team; they were all people I had worked with in the past. I had no doubt in my mind that they would help boost my agency to the next level. Most of the team would be working remotely, while some would accompany me to in-person client meetings.
Now that I had my name, my team, a handful of clients, it was time to get it all officiated. I purchased my business name under an S-Corp, and branding was the next step. Balancing client work and working on building my business’s brand was a challenge. I would dedicate the majority of my time to my clients work but still work on my branding after work hours.
I officially launched my company with the completed logo, social profiles, and website on August 13th, 2021. GetBissy Marketing is currently servicing 12 clients, from fitness centers, medical offices, realtors, to cupcake shops, and much more. GetBissy Marketing will work with any small business that is looking to expand its brand online. We work personally with our clients, guiding them every step of the way. We not only monitor their performance online, but we monitor their business sales as well to make sure our efforts are successful.
I am fortunate to have a bright, young team brimming with talent and new ideas. I pour my heart and soul into this business and to making sure our clients are meeting the goals they need to meet. I owe a lot of my success to my personality and speaking ability. Like I say, when you beam positivity, success will follow.
The turning point for me was February of 2021, and the motivation to be my own boss and work independently was something I always wanted to achieve. It pushed me to go above and beyond for GetBissy Marketing and still does to this day. There is nothing better than working for yourself and being surrounded by a talented team.
I cannot wait to see what new heights GetBissy will reach as we continue to turn businesses into busier, better brands.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GetBissy Marketing works personally with each of our clients. From the initial meeting process, we sit down, dive deep into the history of their business and how they are looking to market their business. Our team researches our potential clients before the first meeting. We then brainstorm as a team to provide them with an in-depth marketing proposal. What sets us apart is that we listen.
We customize each proposal to properly fit their business and budget. Once they sign on as our client, we contact them weekly, making sure to update them with our new ideas and checking in to see how our marketing efforts are working.
These abilities and principles, along with our commitment to our clients success, make us a formidable partner. Our clients praise our employees professionalism, attentive relationship, knowledge, and innovation on a regular basis. We understand that our clients success is a measure of our success. That makes us a special agency you cannot find anywhere else.
Starting my own business has definitely been a challenge, but I quickly created an organized work environment that has helped the business flourish. Picking a great team to work with has been one of my largest contributions to my business’s success. I have such a talented team of young workers.
When I first started working, I was managing all aspects of the business, and that was a stressful and challenging time. At times I was working long hours and could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t not have much in my savings, so I wasn’t able to purchase the software that was necessary to have or produce higher-quality content. I also wanted to provide more services for my clients, but I wasn’t able to do so without a larger team or more experts. This all meant I had to continue to work harder and longer, until I could afford technology and staff.
After months of long hours and some savings, I was able to start purchasing the software I needed and hiring staff. Once I had a diverse team, I was able to take on more clients and provide additional services. The quality of our services has also improved due to the specialization of the team, and there are more brains working together to become more creative.
Even though I was laid off and struggling to find a new job in the middle of a pandemic, I was able to kick off my own business. The remote work helped everything move along smoothly. Sometimes perseverance and faith can overcome the hardest times.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1 – I would take them to Coral Gables and walk around that area for bit. Eat at Green Street for breakfast. Head over to Merrick Park in the afternoon to shop for a bit. We would then go to Yard House for a tasty steak dinner and call it a night.
Day 2- We would head over to Key Biscayne. We’d get a quick, Cuban breakfast at Party Cake Bakery. Then we’d stop at Publix to pick up Publix subs and snacks to take to the beach. We’d spend most of the day at the lighthouse beach in Key Biscayne. For dinner we’d eat at Boater’s Grill, a delicious seafood restaurant by the water.
Day 3- We’d go to La Carreta for a big Cuban Breakfast. Then we’d go spend the day in Dadeland Mall for some more shopping. We’d eat lunch at the Cheesecake Factory and go watch a movie at Sunset Place at night.
Day 4 – We’d go to brunch at Copper Blues in Doral, go home to rest for a bit, then head to Pueblito Viejo for a fun Columbian dinner.
Day 5- We would wake up early and head to Hollywood Beach. Once we arrive, we would eat lunch at Taco Beach Shack for some of the best tacos in South Florida. We’d then spend the whole day at the beach and rent bikes to bike down the boardwalk. Later in the day we’d stop into Ben & Jerry’s for some delicious ice cream. At night before leaving we’d get dinner at Rocco’s.
Day 6 – We’d get a country breakfast at Chuck Wagon restaurant, then spend the morning at Tropical Park. We would take some skates and skate around the park. Later in the day we would get ready and head out to Brickell. We would get drinks at Sugar, a rooftop bar. We would eat dinner at Moxie’s later in the night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my family because I would not be where I am today without their love and support. My family is the reason I am who I am today. I would like to thank my incredible friends who show so much support for my business. Lastly, Jesus Christ, because I owe my life to Him. He was my #1 inspiration for all that I do.
