We had the good fortune of connecting with Blondie Catarina Starke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blondie, how do you think about risk?
I see risk as a catalyst for personal and artistic growth. Every time I push myself outside of my comfort zone or try something new, whether it’s experimenting with a new genre of music, collaborating with different artists, or taking on challenging projects, I learn and evolve as an artist. Without taking risks, I believe it’s difficult to innovate and progress. Being an artist and DJ often involves navigating uncertain terrain. The music industry is dynamic and constantly changing, and taking risks means embracing this uncertainty. While it can be intimidating, it’s also what keeps things exciting and drives creativity. Some of my most memorable and rewarding experiences have come from stepping into the unknown. Not every risk I’ve taken has resulted in success, and that’s okay. Failure is a valuable teacher. It’s through my mistakes and setbacks that I’ve gained valuable insights, honed my skills, and developed resilience. Risk-taking has taught me that setbacks are not the end but rather opportunities for growth and improvement.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I stand out as a woman in a male-dominated industry, and my 20-year career as a DJ began during my teenage years. I’m particularly proud of winning first place in the global female DJ battle in Mumbai. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but I’ve always embraced challenges as opportunities for growth.

My unique background, being born and raised in the Philippines, has deeply influenced my music. My family’s musical legacy, with a grandmother who was an opera singer, a grandfather who was a prodigy, and parents who were talented musicians has been my source of inspiration.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that resilience and determination are key to success in this industry. My story is a testament to the power of passion and adaptability. Through my music, I aim to bridge cultures and connect with people worldwide.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m currently based in Detroit, a city that I believe is one of the best-kept secrets in the U.S. I’d start our adventure with a visit to the world-renowned Detroit Institute of Arts, where you can immerse yourself in an incredible collection of art from around the world. Afterward, we’d unwind with dinner at one of the many incredible restaurants and end the night with a nightcap at Kiesling, a hidden gem of a bar that happens to be my local favorite.

The following day, we’d embark on a journey through time with a champagne tour at the historic Whitney mansion, now beautifully converted into a restaurant. You’ll be awe-inspired by the original Tiffany lamps and even lightbulbs installed by none other than Thomas Edison himself. Detroit has a treasure trove of these hidden historical gems.

If you’re up for late-night adventures, Detroit’s underground scene has an eclectic vibe that might remind you of Berlin. We’d explore these unique venues that come alive after dark.

On another day, we’d take a leisurely stroll through Eastern Market, where you’ll find the best local produce, artisanal goods, and a vibrant atmosphere. I’d introduce you to some of the friendliest vendors and make sure we sample some of the city’s best street food. We’d also venture into charming antique thrift shops, where I’ve often discovered hidden treasures, adding a touch of nostalgia to our adventure.

This trip to Detroit would be a mix of art, history, hidden delights, and late-night surprises, showcasing the diverse and vibrant culture that makes this city truly special.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate my shoutout to my incredible family and friends. Their unwavering support, love, and belief in my artistic journey have been my rock and source of inspiration. They’ve been there through every high and low.

In addition to my inner circle, I’d like to recognize the profound impact that Abraham Hicks’ publications have had on my life and career. The wisdom and insights found in her books and teachings have been a guiding light in my creative process, shaping my mindset and approach to my craft.

Furthermore, I owe credit to the entire community of artists, DJs, and musicians who have supported and collaborated with me along the way. Their collective creativity and passion have not only enriched my art but also reminded me of the collaborative nature of the music industry. It’s through these connections that I’ve learned, grown, and found a sense of belonging in this vibrant world of music.
