We had the good fortune of connecting with Blue Lemon Counseling Lauren Borrell and Julianne Peters and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Blue Lemon Counseling, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
With having worked in a group practice for several years, going into business for ourselves would be a natural next step in our career path. We are always looking for opportunities for professional growth and this helped to challenge us in our skills. In our graduate programs, we were taught about the clinical side of practice, but the business side was largely left out of the conversation.

Working with insurance companies throughout our career has been disheartening and we wanted to seek more autonomy as providers. Operating a self-pay practice has lended itself to giving the power back to our clients.

As an added benefit, we have had more room to pursue desired areas of specialization. This helps us expand our knowledge in order to give our clients optimal care.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Blue Lemon Counseling, we offer specialized treatment for populations specific to maternal mental health and LGBTQ+. We believe this sets us apart from other practices taking a more generalized approach. The business started to unfold on our Friday-funday outings. Quickly, dreaming turned into taking real steps like training modules and research. Much to our surprise, the biggest challenge was choosing a business name. We spent several weeks deliberating until landing on a name that symbolizes the distinction between what you see on the outside and what someone may be experiencing on the inside.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Columbus has an eclectic food scene and so many options to choose from. My ideal weekend would be spent in Grandview, which happens to be the location of our office space. To start the morning off, coffee at Staufs is a must, followed by a healthy and delicious breakfast at Alchemy. Next on the itinerary is making your own candles at the Candle Lab, followed by a drink at Grandview Cafe. If you love authentic Italian food, La Tavola, is the place to go. To cap off the night enjoy drinks by the fireplace on the patio of Round II or live music at Natalie’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been many people to support us on our journey from previous supervisors to the owner of our former group practice. Namely, we would like to recognize our partners, Tim Peters and Angie Kim. They immersed themselves in our process of building the business from beginning to end. We can’t thank them enough for reviewing our website countless times and saving the day with renovating our new office.
