We had the good fortune of connecting with Borak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Borak, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m a Turkish artist who moved in to USA 6 years ago and started from scratch. As a DJ my main style is eclectic dance music and the Turkish culture and background of mine is at the heart of my diversity. From the childhood tales that I grew up with to the song that I’ve been listening for many years I use a lot of references from my own cultural background to develop and deliver my taste of music.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a person who came from a completely different culture and country I have to admit that the first year of my journey in US was a little bit challenging. Understanding the dynamics of the culture and the music scene here took a while for me yet eventually I was able to adapt. Just like everything in life all the beautiful things I have in my life right came with their own challenges but it is part of the journey and I think it’s really important that you have to dive in with full commitment. I guess the biggest challenge for me was to be able create my own space and community in the scene yet I’m so happy of my today self when I look back and see how much progress I made.
Again, all of the challenges are part of the process and my reward so far is a consistent booking schedule, so many beautiful and successful people around me and an environment to be able to share my passion of music.
That is something I’m extremely grateful for.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I’m based in Los Angeles, California. It’s no secret that California has one of the best environments and natural areas in the world. A short escape to Joshua Tree, a nice little hike up in the trails of Malibu, a walk by the beach at Santa Monica is always amazing. When the night comes, here we have some of the best curators of dance music in US.
My friend can catch me on a Thursday night or at a weekend showcase at Members club. Which I’d be delighted to see my friend is coming and supporting me during my showcase 🙂
Other than that I would never say no to a nice dinner at one of LA’s world renowned fine dining restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I absolutely agree and I have my own hero too. In 2013 I started my professional career in the entertainment industry as a radio host and on air personality in one of the most successful radio stations of Turkey, Power FM. I still consider those days of mine as the biggest training that I could ever have and my mentor at Power FM, Burcin Acer who is one of the most successful media personas that the country has seen taught me so much.
You see, being a mentor doesn’t mean that some person leads in a certain profession.
A mentor has to be the lighthouse in your life journey by being a perfect example for you not only professionally but also an influencer for your personal life.
I still remember all the life lessons Burcin has taught me and trying to apply them to my daily life every single day.
