We had the good fortune of connecting with Bree Feibischoff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bree, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was in advertising prior to being a business owner. I worked as a copywriter (for Snickers) at a large agency in NYC. Every day, for years, I would write about how delicious Snickers are, with the perfect ratio of caramel, chocolate and nougat. And I hate Snickers- it’s probably my least favorite candy. I figured, if I could write about how incredible Snickers are, why can’t I do that for a company of my own that I believe in. I had the advertising background, all I needed was the idea.
All it took was a simple move to Miami for me to realize this was my calling. I tried the advertising thing and had the absolute worst experience. On the weekends, I found myself flying back to NYC for sample sales. I then had my aha-moment – WHY don’t sample sales exist in Miami?!?! Who doesn’t like a deal? The advertiser in me was like okay, this is so much easier to hype up than a candy bar. Let’s give it a go.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is basically crazy online flash sales. We work with different brands and host sales for them 3-4 days at a time. We push their overstock and sell true samples so that we can get pricing to around 70-90% off retail. What sets Miami Sample apart from other sample sale companies is that we work with the small, new brands (of course as well as the big, established brands), but at the end of the day, everyone has some overstock. It’s nice to be able to help small businesses and make them money while giving them exposure. There’s also nothing better than introducing hot, new brands to our followers. We have such an incredible customer base and whenever I work with a new brand, I’m like “I am about to introduce your brand to the most amazing following in the world…. you’re welcome!” They’re so loyal.
I’m most proud of how far we have come in just a year and a half. I’ve partnered with over 120 brands so far and have averaged 2 sales a week, every single week since I started. Online sample sales were never in the cards for us, but with COVID forcing my store to close, I had to pivot. It was a risk during a global pandemic, but I believe everything happens for a reason. To me, it was the biggest blessing in disguise. I was able to not only scale globally but really go full speed with online marketing. I was officially my own creative director and that felt amazing.
I had zero business background whatsoever. I took a leap of faith and learned by real, raw experience. Of course, I asked for guidance along the way, but it has truly been one big performance without a dress rehearsal. I learn more every single day but will never be a “traditional” businessperson. I cannot send an email without a smiley face in it. Or a “haha” here and there. I make friends with everyone I work with. I’m still learning how to be a boss, and a client, without being best friends. But not making any promises.
I know this sounds really cliché, but I want the world to know that if you have an idea you believe in, just go for it. If I would have listened to all the people who told me not to do it, I would not be here today. And another thing is you REALLY find out who your friends are. There are so many people who will secretly (or not so secretly) root against you, and that’s okay! Let them motivate you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooooh!!! Ok first thing’s first, we are going to Makoto the second they land. I don’t like sushi in Miami (bizarre being that it’s coastal) but there’s something about Makoto that is magical. The vibe, the crispy tuna, the long wait…. I’m not even sure it would be good if you can get in easily.
This pains me to tell the world because it’s my little secret, but I’ll take you for the best massage of your life at Tao in Miami Beach. You’ll probably leave unable to speak or walk like I did the first time I went, so naturally, we’ll Uber home in silence.
We’re gonna take a workout class, your choice. Either Solidcore to get absolutely destroyed and humbled or Barry’s for a good sweat.
After that we’ll bike ride along the Venetian and get some drinks at The Standard because let’s be honest, we won’t get a chair at Soho House unless we’re there at 8AM.
We’ll get tacos at Taco Stand, pizza at La Natural and linger outside of Kyu until we can get in.
I’ll also take a really good photo of you on the beach next to a lifeguard stand and let you pose until we find the perfect angle. I’m a ride or die friend. It’ll be perfect for your Insta (or Hinge profile).
I’ll make sure you get in a few good cafecitos before your flight. Don’t worry I’ll explain when we get there. It’s like coffee but way better.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is going to sound a little weird, but I owe it all to the Miami community, most of those who I don’t know. I opened a store in March of 2020. The store was short-lived because of COVID. Unfortunately, I had to shut down 2.5 weeks after opening. But the Miami community had my back 110%. My store was packed every single day that I was open. I had strangers bringing me lunch, coffee, donuts, random people were there helping me set up (if you’re reading this and that’s you, thank you, can I pay you???) People were just in and out doing whatever it took to help keep my head above water and I truly have never seen a community come together like that, especially to help one random New York transplant who wanted to start a business.
