We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My end goal is to be a successful business owner as an interior designer, working on projects that fulfill me as a creative person & bring happiness to everyone who walks into a space designed by me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My skills & craft are still a working progress. I feel like as artist your always continuously learning & evolving. I didn’t even know that interior design was my passion until 2018. Of course the story didn’t come together for me until everything fell apart first. I was working for a company that suddenly decided to close their doors & a few other chapters had recently ended in that same time period of my life. So I found myself without a job, about to go on a week vacation to Mexico for my best friends wedding & I just told myself I wanted to go with the flow & have a good time & figure out what I wanted to do next. I had no idea what that was going to be but I knew it had to be something I truly enjoyed.

I actually don’t know the exact moment I realized that it was interior design but I do remember going back to those memories of being a kid & watching Trading spaces with my mom & watching other design shows & thinking about all the different times I painted my room & redesigned it & how natural it felt to me & the immediate joy it gave me each time.

A light bulb just went off in my head & I said let me try the interior design field! The only problem was that I did not have a formal education in interior design. I knew I had to start from the bottom. Luckily I grew up in south Florida & not far from the Design center of the americas in Dania Beach, Fl.

So I decided to apply to a Luxury furniture showroom by the name of Baker Furniture. I secured an interview & I was nervous of course because I had no experience in the world of interior design, all I knew was sales. Which was just enough. I sold myself to the showroom manager. I told her my story & how I wanted to explore the world of design & she felt my passion early on & If I remember correctly, she hired me on the spot. Her name was Robin & I’m so thankful to her till this day because she believed in me & she gave my first foot in the door of design industry.

Since then I’ve worked for a few other similar trade companies & an interior designer here in Miami. My journey has had its ups & downs. Everything from designing my first projects & seeing them come to life to the covid era & other unexpected changes. But throughout each experience I have learned & unlocked a new skill that I did not know I had. & In each role that I’ve taken on I have learned & applied it to the next chapter of my career.

Which brings me to where I am today, working towards building up my portfolio, & working towards my end goal of building my own interior design business “Bloom Design Space”.

It has not been easy especially since I have the typical Aquarius mentality of I can do it all on my own! Lol! But I’m still learning, I’m still growing & BLOOMING!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s funny you ask, I’m definitely the friend everyone calls to ask where to go! I love to explore & try new things. I actually started a written blog recommending places to go visit or eat at before it became as simple as taking a video & posting it on social media!

The itinerary would consist of Super blue Miami, the Pamm art Museum, the Frost science museum next door to the Pamm. I love that museum everything from the giant overhead fish tank, the jelly fish tank to watching a laser show inside the planetarium. Then I would probably head to Uptown 66 for a steak burrito & a margarita & to keep the party going id probably end up at a happy hour either in Wynwood or Brickell at a place Iv probably never been to before because why not!?

For a more scenic route I would take them down to the florida keys because it’s all about the drive down not the actual destination.

If they wanted to see history I would take them to Coconut grove, visit Vizcaya or Deering estate. Classic Miami staples.

For nightlife I would go to Wynwood, or a “underground” bar in Mimo but would most likely end the night sweating & dancing to Bad Bunny at Twist in South beach.

But one thing is forsure at some point a beach day is a must! I love North beach, Haulover or South point beach, with a cooler filled with fruit & cheese, pub-subs & of course cocktails!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I’d like to dedicate where I got my creativity from is my mom. She always has been a creative person. She’s always enjoyed crafts & design till this day. My earliest memory of her sharing her creativity with me goes as far back to when I was a toddler & playing with play-doh. I remember her showing me how to make a bunny with a basket filled with little eggs made of play-doh.
Then in my early teen years I grew up watching TLC’s trading spaces religiously with her & my step dad. Which of course always inspired me to change my room, She would let me pick out the paint color & decorate it how I wanted. She always supported my creativity in that way & I now know that it was those underlying memories that sparked my love for interior design.
