We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianna Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brianna, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
When it comes to being a Cake Designer, there is a great deal of work that comes with the territory. You may see a beautiful cake on your display table or stand, not realizing that hours of driving, baking, prepping and not being with your family are involved with creating that masterpiece.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider cake designing an edible creation! What sets me apart, is that I follow what’s in my heart and let my creativity flow on its own. I don’t seek inspiration from outside sources, I go within. With that said, my style of designing, my color choice, and my decorative preferences are very unique.
I am most proud of not giving up on myself even in times when business gets very overwhelming, and I am on the verge of burn out.
I made a promise to myself for six months straight without deterring from my intention, I was going to start baking and decorating and not stop until the six month mark was up. From that point on, I decided if I didn’t like it, at least I gave myself a fair chance at something new. Lo and behold I loved it more than I thought. Everything I learned was self taught, and I practiced every single day until it was flawless. I practice, until my cakes were most tender, moist and delicious.
None of what comes with being a Cake Designer is easy, and there are challenges to overcome, even when you’re an expert.
Some of the lessons I learned along the way, is how to have great customer service first and foremost. That’s the key to getting and keeping clients. Another great lesson is time management being that I am a homebase Baker, and it took some time to adjust to being a mom and being able to separate the two in My Home.
What I’d love the world to know about my brand, and my story is that this is something that I promised myself many years ago that I would achieve. I didn’t know what I would be doing, but I didn’t know I wanted to be a business owner, and I wanted it to involve some thing that allowed me to be creative with no limits. Caked Up was born during the pandemic, and I will always hold the thought that beautiful things can be created in the darkest places during the darkest times!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is South Florida! You can’t visit Florida without going to the beach. That would be the first stop! Going during sunrise is the most beautiful site you can see, and of course, getting a natural suntan who doesn’t want to be Sunkissed while vacationing on Florida’s ocean? South Florida is full of island, people and food Jamaican cuisine is a must. Places like Carl’s seafood, and Donna’s are some of the most delicious restaurants. As well as coffee shops that are local to me in Coral Springs.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize my followers and my fans first and foremost! There are some people that have been with me from the very beginning. Only when I had two or three likes on my posts. Then, there are those who were willing to sample my products and give me their honest opinion about my cakes and cupcakes. If it weren’t for the constant support from my social media community, my work wouldn’t have been pushed out nearly as much as it has been.
I’d also like to think my mentor Thomas, who gave me insight on business ownership, and gave me a little nudge, and a boost of confidence in the beginning of my baking career.
